I remember when there was a serial rapist on the loose in Orlando, FL. The Orange County Sheriff’s Department offered free shooting classes for women and there was a huge turnout. The rapes stopped.

Gender is irrelevant. It's an issue of disparity of force: being attacked because the attacker believes s/he is physically superior. Equalization (or better yet, role reversal) for the underdog is crucial for survival. Thing is, the reality of the disparity may not be obvious - and being chosen for the apparent disparity may result in suffering from an even more extreme actual disparity.
I'm a pretty normal & healthy looking male. If chosen for, say, a mugging it would most likely be because the perp thinks he can at least threaten/cause enough harm to get me to comply (probably via knife or other weapon). Thing is, I'm on blood thinners: if injured to the point of bleeding, I could easily "bleed out" in a hurry. Ergo, if attacked, I have to stop that threat _fast_; playing "scratch him with your keys" or "be a man, use your fists" games doesn't cut it. My "disability" is far from obvious, but that doesn't mean I should do anything less than "extreme prejudice": "adequte defense" isn't enough to satisfactorally prevent that short step to eternity.

I bought my first gun last week: a Mossberg Persuader (12 gauge shotgun). I went to a range Thursday to get some instruction on it because I’d never used a shotgun before.
I plan to buy a handgun next. I’ve only shot a .357 revolver, a 9mm Glock, and my ex-BF’s Glock which I believe was a .40 caliber and was pretty powerful. Any recommendations? :-)
In honor of the idiots who actually say this - they are out there - I propose National Helpless Victim Day. Anyone who believes this nonsense can wear a t shirt that proclaims his adherence to the right of the criminal to rob, rape, torture, and murder without encountering any mean - spirited, right - wing, violent resistance. As a further commitment to their cause, they can sign a pledge that they will not prosecute the crimes, since that might also interfere with the criminal's rights.
I will support them enthusiastically in this endeavor. :)
