The Hobbit Hole XXXVII - ...Down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed!

Posted on 09/25/2008 6:43:34 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!

O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.

O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.

O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

Good morning, and good night ... I felt the need to get my chaos-bringer in place.

Tomorrow I have to explain it all. Yikes!

It's a start ...!

These folks have money. "High-end sporters" sounds like something they would have possessed.

"Have money" clarifies a lot. While there were elegant and expensive shotguns made by Remington, Winchester, and LC Smith, they might opt for some really snooty British doubles by Purdy. If they did the safari bit, they'd have "dangerous game" double rifles by Holland and Holland. Or perhaps a German drilling, which is usually a 16ga double-barrel shotgun with a single rifle barrel of medium-to-large caliber underneath.

There were plenty of rifle choices in American guns. Just about every maker had stuff from the plain to the highly ornate, including custom-built.

The Winchester 1886 lever action was the first one strong enough to handle the "big 50s" in rifle calibers for buffalo and grizzly. Normally those calibers came in single shots like the Sharps before that. The Winchester 1892 was a scaled-down 1886 for small-to-medium calibers. If I wanted to show refined good taste, I'd have them made up at the custom shop with fancy walnut, a tiny bit of engraving, and half-round/half-octagon barrels. They'd also be made in takedown form, with a velvet-lined leather case and a canvas outer case to protect the leather one.

Barrel lengths on shotguns is determined by the game you're after. Waterfowl was usually hunted with shotgun with 36-40 inch barrels. The birds were a long way off, and you had get all the velocity you could to reach them. "Upland game" like quail or pheasant were taken at either very short or medium ranges. You needed fast handling, not a lot of barrel. A 20-inch barrel with open choke is the best choice. The better the shot you are, the smaller and lighter a shotgun you can use. 12ga would almost be considered non-sporting", especially if you've hunted grouse in the Scottish highlands. A man could get away with a 20ga, and a woman, especially if she's an expert and wants to show off, might use a petite 28ga.

I doubt if I'd be on horseback after a 6 inch snow, especially if I'm just looking to scare up some rabbit or bird for a gourmet meal. For longer travel after bigger game, a saddle scabbard would be a must, along with a large-caliber handgun, in case you get separated from your horse and your rifle.

not much I can add to winmag’s post...

but if’n yer talkin’ Tejas in January, remember, there were no enforced hunting seasons for game. But in snow in January, any indigenous fowl, mule deer, rabbit, or any predators...

A Springfield ‘03 would be good for black bear to cougar, mule deer to ‘yotes, antelope... too much gun fer small game...

My knowledge of high-end doubles is limited...

Time to get started.

At least I had a title come to me in the night... it’ll work for now: “Indistinguishable from Magic”.

Not a writer, but in honor of your efforts and because I am feeling philosophical, I am changing my tagline to what I have felt is one of the loveliest lines in literature.

What would you hunt with a Springfield 1903 rifle?

I hunted deer in northern CA with dad's 1903. It was cut down and had a sporter stock so it pretty much looked like a Remington 700 or some other civilian rifle. Almost a shame because it was near mint other than the mods.

I really have to read that book one of these days....

Mornin’, all. I haven’t started yet. I think I’m gonna brew a big pot of coffee and make something nice for breakfast, spread out all my writing stuff on the table, and make myself sit down for an hour or so. If I can get at least a few paragraphs down, maybe I’ll actually do this thing.

But the whole thing is gonna be like driving at night. In a fog. I can only see about ten words ahead of me.

I can only see about ten words ahead of me.

But see, that's a really good line.

We're back from The Pinewood Derby. Luke came in 4th in his division. Would've bumped up to third if the 1st place car had one over all, but it got smoked by a really fast car in another division. Anyway, he's happy.

We're heading to Virginia Beach soon as Mrs. gets back from runnin' an errand. No more words until later tonight, or perhaps tomorrow. Maybe the crashing of the waves will inspire me...

Good Morning ALL - Glad the little miscreant has a chance to enjoy free room and board for a good long time.

How bout that fog, it would have been more appropriate last night. Still hanging in there but isn’t going to last much longer.

The controversy had to do with the fact that Ave Maria (the town) was a joint venture between the Collier family and Ave Maria Univ., mainly Tom Monaghan, the former owner of Domino's Pizza. The media tried to portray the town as some cultish Catholic enclave, when it was never going to be that, and isn't now.

The infighting had to do with Monaghan's decision to move Ave Maria College from Michigan, down to FL. Some of the professors and students didn't want to move, and complained publicly about it. Same thing happened when they decided to move Ave Maria Law School from Michigan to the new University campus in FL. Some of the professors and staff members didn't want to go to FL, and considered it some sort of betrayal that the school was moving. Regardless, the Univ. is growing quickly, and the Law School will be re-locating there sometime next year, I believe.

Morning Miss Rose - My choice would be Mule Deer hunting, possibly pronghorn antelope. Most any of the Winchester rifles available then would work, Winchester Models 1886 or 1895 would be appropriate, the Model 1895 had a box magazine not the tubular magazine like the rest of the line featured. The 1895 was also made in the .30 U S, the standard service rifle of the US Army, it’s more commonly refered to as the 30/40 Krag cartridge. There’s also the Winchester 92 and of course the Winchester 94. The Winchester company offered special orders on their rifles, any grade of wood, engraving, inlays, so well to do folks could have high grade rifle.

I’ll get started eventually.... I’ve written a lot of notes on the story I’m abandoning while I’m stalling, though. Too bad those don’t count.

Congrats to Luke! Not bad.

Mmm...crashing waves....
