McCain is being a leader, putting country first. The congress is acting like this is not a crisis, but when the Dow loses another 1000 points, they will have so much pressure to solve it that they will - and McCain will be right in the middle, whether they like it or not. When the deal is made, McCain can play commercials showing he got things to happen, while Obama is in the middle of nowhere waiting by the phone in case they need him.

It would be wise for McCain to forget the ClintonFest. If he feels he should be in DC he should get his ass there right now, not tomorrow after his speech.

The downside risks for McCain are two:

• Both the conservatives and the 'Rats might oppose this bailout, for different reasons:

  the conservatives because they figure it's too deeply flawed;
  the 'Rats because they want to undermine Bush and McCain.

  Then McCain will be aligned with Bush, failing to deliver, with a good chance of a falling economy or stock market between now and the election. That's a difficult spot to be in for McCain.
• Some agreement, scorned by the conservatives, might pass, disheartening the Republican base in somewhat the same way that some infamous McCain compromises (on judges, immigration and campaign financing, for example) have disheartened us. Even if such an agreement holds off any serious failure in the economy, it could cost McCain the base and the election. If such an agreement fails to hold off a serious economic downturn (say, a stock market crash) in the next six weeks, then it would be double jeopardy for McCain.

As another person mentioned I’d LOVE to see them turn Sarah loose while John is “busy” in Washington! Unless of course he is going to invite her to “sit in” on the meetings. THAT might be interesting itself... I don’t think she’d be too keen on taking close to a trillion of our taxpayer dollars and funneling it to the idiots who caused this crisis in the first place!

I like it... Especially as a lot of Democrats and Independents would be reminded of Hillary saying the same thing - even if just subconsciously. “I bring experience, McCain brings experience, and Obama brings a speech he gave in 2002!” LOL
