Allen Park, MI (Sports Network) - Matt Millen has been relieved of his duties as president and CEO of the Detroit Lions.
Lions owner and chairman William Clay Ford made the announcement Wednesday.
"I believe that this decision is in the best interest of this organization," said Ford. "I appreciate Matt's efforts. Matt worked tirelessly during his tenure to win, and he would be the first one to tell you that you have to win in this league. It just didn't work out."
Millen had been in charge of the Lions since 2001. The team has produced an NFL-worst record of just 31-84 in that time, including 0-3 this season.
Detroit has been outscored 113-59 in three losses this season heading into this week's bye.
"I am very disappointed with where we are as a team after our start this season," Ford added. "Our sole focus now is preparing for our next game against Chicago. The entire organization must work together and do whatever we can to make this a successful season. Despite our record, it is still early and there is time to turn this season around."

I bet he is relieved to leave Detroit. Not all players make good coaches and managers. He was a good LB.
bout time, maybe just maybe, the Lions will get a real CEO
I think he actually managed the team while living in Pennsylvania for a period of time.
Note to Ford: Hire a real GM, change the uniforms, and get rid of Jon Kitna.
The Detroit Lions are not a football team, they are like rodeo clowns in that they keep crowds laughing at their slapstick humor while at the same time taking horn shots up the arse to protect the REAL players in the game.
Now will you please fire Kitna, and give Dan Orlovsky a chance??
I stopped caring about NFL football when the Vikings started studying the parolee lists for their draft choices.
These days there are true serious issues to worry the calm soul. I can't get too worked up by what steps any NFL team takes...or any major league team for that matter. It just doesn't make that much difference in the grand scheme of things.
Yeah, Bill, get rid of the black trim. Doesn't look Lionish at all. Bobby Layne wouldn't be caught dead in it.
And could my Eagles please bring back that kelly green?
ff
This should have happened a long time ago.
Maybe if they brought Rodney Peete back, everything would be OK. :P
