Detroit finished with Mat Millen's Lion era: report

LOS ANGELES -- The Detroit Lions evidently have parted ways with Matt Millen, ending his tumultuous tenure as one of the most maligned sports executives in Motor City history.

The Lions have finally removed the embattled Millen from his post as team president and general manager, FOXSports reported Wednesday.

The web site did not state whether the Lions fired Millen or if the former Pro Bowl linebacker resigned. The Lions have not confirmed or denied the report.

Millen has been the architect of a Lions franchise that has deteriorated into arguably the worst team in the NFL in recent years.

Since Millen's controversial hiring in 2001, the Lions have posted a league-worst 31-84 record and have endured six seasons with double-digit losses.

Despite winning six of their first eight games last season, the Lions finished with a 7-9 record - their best mark during Millen's tenure. Detroit has been brutal in losing its first three games this season, leading to renewed calls for Millen's ouster.

Lions vice chairman Bill Ford Jr., a Ford Motor Company executive chairman and the son of team owner William Clay Ford, made headlines Monday when he publicly commented that he would fire Millen if he had the authority

Matt was a great Linebacker, but made the mistake of believing his own BS.

Matt was a great linebacker, and those who met him out here, liked him.

Having said that, what skills did Matt have to land the job he apparently no longer has?

The Lions front office has never really cared about the fans or winning....anything!
As long as they fill the seats and make money, they will never care how badly the Lions are. They've never really had a "team". Every now and then they'll pick up a potential superstar from the college draft and say they'll build a franchise around him, but all they really do is ruin someone's career.
Look at the Wings, Pistons, and the Tigers. At one point they were in bad shape, but they were bought by people who care and want to win, and they did!

Absolutely.

Lions need new ownership. Hmmmm...maybe the Mittengan State Legislature can buy them, call it a bail-out!

Pre-GM Matt was doing a report on training camp for NFL refs and was in full striped uniform behind the defensive line at a 49 ers practice

wide receiver cuts across the middle and Matt dipped his shoulder and tripped up the wide-out

pretty endearing to myself, very funny

this Bear fan is sad to see him go, the Lions will only get better without him.

Oh Noooooooo!
With Millen there it was two guaranteed Bear wins. Man, I sure hope they hire someone just as incompetent.

(Hmm, what's Wanny up to these days?)

How in the Hell did a former linebacker and sports analyst become a GM?? Correct me if I’m wrong, but Millen had zero executive experience. Lions should have hired Ron Wolf like GB did, and get rid of those stupid royal blue uniforms, the 2nd ugliest uniforms in the NFL after the Seahawks.

Good buddy of mine grew up in Michigan, now lives in Chicago. Can’t get behind Da Bears, so he comes to The Meadowlands with me once/year to watch football. I am happy for him and for all the Detroit fans...maybe they’ll have a good Thanksgiving this year.

Old seahawks colors were awful. Their current uniform and colors are great. The detroit lions (powder blue and silver) uniforms are hideous. Miami’s suck as well.
