Alaska was admitted on June 3, 1959, as the 56th U. S. state. Obama told me!

I know Anchorage was the most fun place in the world to live in the ‘70s and ‘80s! The Pipeline boom was going strong, everyone was having a good time, and the money flowed like water.

The best thing about the place is the independent spirit, and true “tolerance” — not the crap they call tolerance in the Lower 48.

we drove there once thru British Columbia....mostly dirt roads ....once in Alaska, roads were paved, lots of nice looking development north of Anchorage....we climbed that mountain right outside of Anchorage where you could see the ocean and Anchorage and lots of other mountains..

we had pizza at "MoosesTooth" and we took trips down to the Kenai.....

we had our camper but ended up sleeping at the visitors quarters on Fr Rich....

we wanted to do some really serious salmon fishing on a wild river but ended up fishing at Ship creek...which is downtown Anchorage right along a Holiday Inn I think...

the funniest scene in the world....you have people lining the banks of the river, 6 ft apart...you cast your line in...actually slam it into the water and you get to bring it down about 10 feet before you had to retrieve it or else you'd be in someone else's area....

the natives were experts...those guys would get a salmon on and they would go down the river for several hundred yards before bringing it in...

I caugth a huge salmon fishing there....about a 35-40 pounder....

since we went at solstice, everyone fished practically all night....

everyone was very friendly and helpful and everyone was fun...

the mud is terrible in some sections....if you get stuck you almost need the fire dept to get you out....

we had the best time....

we drove up to Denali in the middle of the night...it was not completely dark, and slept in the parking lot until the park opened...

on the way home, we went up to Tok and then to "top of the world" and some place called "Chicken" .....

gorgeous trip thru Alaska and British Colombia....

LOVE Alaska....thinking about moving there if this election doesn't turn around....I'm a nurse and we can work anywhere...

Right whale gives us good reports from there, Fairbanks I think. Thackney left and returned to Texas. Both are outstanding FReepers

I had a great visit in 2007, along with zillions of others. I observed a sign that said “Happiness is a Texan headed home...with an Okie under each arm”

Alaska is breathtaking and magnificent. When traveling, think in at least 100 mile increments

Great pictures! Your comment, “When traveling, think in at least 100 mile increments” is very telling.

Unfortunately that is not a picture of me or a bear I shot. I took the pic from a hunting guide’s website out of Wasilla. I'd love to take my son there hunting. For now we are chasing Whitetails and turkey here in the Southeast.
