Or, bypassing the “I gotta have it” and “Apple is so cool!” mentalities, buy one of SanDisk’s Sansa music players for a lot less money — they play MP3 and WMA files, with no subscriptions and no special software needed (just drag and drop).

Addendum: I’m presuming that Linux systems can drag-and-drop MP3 files, in a fashion analagous to Windows File Manager. (If this is not the case, I stand corrected...)

If any of you will take the plunge to Ogg Vorbis, you will never go back to MP3, WMA or AAC as far as lossy compressed music formats.

Of these, Rhythmbox and Amarok are my faves. My favorite all-in-one media player is VLC. It plays music files and streaming radio and streaming video and DVDs (DVD playback depends on having libdvdcss2 installed).
