“We’re not talking fancier engraved over/under skeet/clays guns here...”
But I can still have one, right? That’s on my Christmas List from Husband this year. :)
Very nice article. Thank you. :)
I own a couple but can, and would like to, always learn more about firearms.
Great idea! And thanks for mentioning the Taurus brand. The new Tauruses come with a lifetime guarantee. They used to not have such a good reputation, but they have greatly improved and the NEW ones, the difference between them and S & W is the name, that’s basically it. And the price. Taurus is cheaper.
Just my opinion, don’t want to start a war here. :D
That's my wife's 'just in case' gun because it scares most uninitiated on sight, and is still an excellent close range Deer gun. If she never cleans it, it isn't going to care at all.

Lots there.
Personally, I believe that it's a good idea to have AT LEAST 1000 rounds for each caliber, maybe even that much for each weapon even if you have multiple weapons of the same caliber.
Right now I have a AR-7 knock off .22 surival rifle, & I an looking at the High Point rifles for other uses. The High Point firearms look to me to be a good budget minded series, and fairly reilable with not a lot of moving parts. There is a lot of 9mm ammo around too [even though I DO NOT like it!]
We have to think on what we can scrounge up in a worse case situation!
Something to think of in the unspeakable scenario — where will you get ammo? Wal-Mart ain’t open anymore. Your ammo will likely come from a) whatever you have hoarded over the years and b) what you can beg, borrow, or steal from whatever military / LE presence is on the ground.
This tilted me towards the 9mm pistol and .223 rifle. I’ll likely always be able to scrounge some .223, much harder to scrounge up 7.62x39.
At any rate, I believe everyone needs at least four guns: a .22 rifle for hunting small game, a good, reliable, reasonably accurate pistol, a 12 gauge pump shotgun, and a military-style rifle. My choices are a Ruger 10/22, a Glock 17, a Remington 870, and a AR variant. Your mileage will mostly likely vary.

.22 semiauto rifle, Hi-Standard .22 semiauto pistol, Taurus stainless steel .357 revolver, Rossi "Henry-style" lever-action rifle in .357, Beeman "spring-air" pellet rifle in .177.
Still need the shotgun. Will probably spring for a 20 gauge pump in the next year or so.
A 22 rifle is a good small game rifle.
A 12 ga. shotgun, pump or semi-auto, is great for home defense and hunting.
A semi auto rifle, the AR-15 is a good choice for a lot of reasons, magazine availability, light weight, low recoil, accuracy, high firepower.
At least TWO pistols. I would advise getting two of the same model and caliber if possible.
And one more I would add would be a scoped. bolt action hunting rifle in a common caliber like 308 or 30-06.
.22LR, generic.
5.56 (not .223, there is a subtle but meaningful difference), AR-15, major manufacturer.
.308, Remington 700 or Steyr Scout, with high-quality scope.
12ga, Remington 870 or Mossberg 500/590.
9mm or .45ACP, Glock or major M1911.
Get one of each, with minimum 1000 rounds for each.
Keep in mind what “economical” will mean when your life depends on it.
For those wishing to yammer on about the subject, do so.
For those wishing to just get what’s needed and move on with life, there’s your list.
Don’t forget training, minimum of 40 hours on each.
I've only recently started exploring centerfire rifle/pistol combinations that are chambered for the same round. The .357 Mag., .45 Colt and .44 Mag. all gain approximately 200 fps (factory or standard pressure handloads), out of the longer rifle barrels and become pretty formidable, and the rifles, typically Marlin or old Winchester leverguns are very simple, rugged and reliable. This simplifies ammunition requirements and storage. I presently own the aforementioned leverguns, and am energetically seeking a .45 ACP Marlin Camp Carbine.

I have absolutely nothing to add and agree with you on every point. I have:
.22LR pump action rifle
.22LR long barrel pistol
Mossberg 500 pump 12 gauge
AR-15 (.223) with large cap magazines
M1-A1 (.308) with large cap magazines
S&W auto in 9mm and .40 S&W with large cap mags
.45 Long Colt/410 revolver
Marlin lever action w/ scope in .44 Mag
Adequate ammunition for all.
Interesting premise...
This is one of the most forgotten and prolific caliber/rifle combinations that cover both as a game getter and a good defensive rifle. Simple to operate, ammo is easy to find and portability.
