Divorce time for Laura and Salem after today’s show?
Radio-info.com ^ | 09/12/08 | Tom Taylor

The Salem-owned stations have provided the major-market backbone for (Laura) Ingraham’s Talk Radio Network-syndicated show, but today appears to be their last day together. That’s what lies behind yesterday’s announcement that in southern California, Saul Levine’s L.A.-market KGIL/1260 and San Diego-market sister XESURF/540 will pick up Laura beginning next week.

That’s because Laura’s off of Salem’s KRLA (870). I believe she’ll also be off the Salem conservative talk stations in places like Philadelphia (WNTP/990) and Chicago (WIND/560). Earlier this Summer, Laura was locked out (she says) by Talk Radio Network as they began to negotiate a renewal of her five-year deal. That kept her off the air for the ending of the Spring Arbitron period, and lots of owners weren’t thrilled with that. Salem was one of them. Now this week, Laura's been telling on-air callers from specific markets – Salem markets - that she may be gone from that station as of next Monday, and to check her website for the new affiliate. Ingraham’s had a great run with TRN’s Mark Masters, who gave her the daytime clearance she wanted when she left Westwood five years ago. Now Masters apparently faces a hurry-up job of replacing more than a dozen affiliates in major markets.

Passing the word along to Laura Ingraham fans! If you've tuned in the past few days you've heard her say "In the next couple days you may have to search the dial to find the new stations we're on, or look at our website".

I think Laura was on in Cleveland on WHK 1420, which is also a Salem-affiliated station.

This won't affect all markets of course. I'm sure she will continue to be on WTKK Boston (Greater Media), WABC NYC (Citadel) etc. But if you tune in Monday for your "healthy...radio...addiction" and it's not there (in 20 some markets; I think she said it was 20 markets), well, search around or try her site

The other day we found out about a lawsuit by some L.A.
moonbat charging that KRLA wasn’t serving the public
interest by being all-Republican/conservative all the time.
(he apparently couldn’t find the NPR and Air America
affiliates on his radio). The various KRLA talk hosts
were named as co-defendents in his suit including Laura
but she’s gone after today.

WDTK in Detroit and KNUS in Denver might also be Salem
Comm. stations that will drop Laura after today.

I am so glad to know. I’m in LA, searched her website yesterday and could not find a thing about this. Does anyone know more? WOW, what a stupid business decision, imho. I love Laura.

San Diego’s affiliate 1170 sucked anyway. Great programming, no power. She needs a 50,000 watter.

Here’s the daytime coverage area for KESURF 540 AM—which
technically is lic. to Mexico

I do know when visiting southern Cal last year it was playing classic country at that time and coming in well on the 101
as I headed north along the coast.

I think we should be able to sue the LA Times, then. They surely don’t serve ALL the public.

Weaning myself off Laura. Brian & Judge are good and Dennis Miller deserves a shot also.

I’ve listened to Laura for years, but her buddies Noonan, Andrea Mitchell, etc. are getting the free pass from her. I believe Laura needs to take the advice that she serves out frequently....time to move out of the beltway or at least get outside of the DC culture.

Yes that’t the point I was bringing up, just like the whole
Fairness Doctrine deal. In fact someone on a lib radio board
said that bringing back the FD would hurt liberal media because it would force a lot of CONSERVATIVE voices to be heard. Every time you point out that most media is liberal
to a liberal, they won’t believe you. There’s even a book
by the title, “WHAT Liberal Media?”

And conservative talk radio works well which is why it’s
so prevalent. The FCC isn’t in the business of deciding
what stations play or for that matter the govt. shouldn’t
force opposing viewpoints on newspapers, etc. The libs
just don’t get it.

Any guesses on who KRLA will move into her former slot?

I think this is a Salem tactic. They carry a show, allow it to become popular and then start asking for a fee to carry the show.

I believe that is what they did to Dave Ramsey (the finance guy) a few years ago. They asked him to pay somewhere between a million and two million dollars to clear his show on their stations. I wonder if that’s what is going on with Laura.

She may already be gone from KRLA. This morning, her show began with a message: “you’re listening to the best of the Laura Ingraham Show”—in other words, a rerun.

Since nothing is older than yesterday’s news, I switched over to KFI, but I could only take so much of Bill Handel bashing Sarah Palin as a “warmonger” for noting—correctly—that the NATO treaty contains an attack-one-attack-all provision. I then surfed over to KABC, and finally went back to my computer and FR.

From Chicago Sun-Times:

WIND drops Ingraham

• • It’s the end of the line today for Laura Ingraham as midday host on Salem Communications’ news/talk WIND-AM (560).

Starting Monday, she will be replaced from noon to 2 p.m. weekdays by Mike Gallagher.

Ingraham’s syndicated show has been dropped by Salem in 17 of its markets. The move follows a dispute with her distributor.

Gallagher’s show is syndicated by Salem Radio Network.

It looks like she has been replaced by Mike Gallagher, who I happen to like . . not as snarky as Laura is.

An update; what follows is from http://www.radio-info.com

Laura Ingraham’s syndicator announces replacement affils in 10 markets

Laura Ingraham And Talk Radio Network promises to identify seven more - to fully replace what it’s losing with the Salem breakup - next week. CEO Mark Masters tells Radio-Info “We continue to think warmly of Salem and our relationship with them” and says the split “was a business decision based on the continuing expansion and demand for the Laura Ingraham show.” That daily conservative talkshow had cleared on 17 Salem stations since the former Westwood personality went to TRN in 2003.

Here are the ten new affiliates that are being identified: In Los Angeles - Saul Levine’s KGIL at 1260.

In Atlanta, JW Broadcasting’s WCFO (1160).

In Phoenix, Embee’s KXAM (1310).

In San Diego/Tijuana, Saul Levine’s XESURF (540).

In Tampa, Genesis-owned WWBA (1040).

In Denver, Crawford’s KLZ (560).

In Orlando, another Genesis property, WAMT at 1190.
In Louisville, Sports Zone Radio’s WAMT at 1570. In Honolulu, Clear Channel’s KHBZ at 990. And in Hot Springs, AR, Noalmark’s KPZA (590).

But next week brings the announcements for new partners in some of Laura’s biggest markets: Seattle, Minneapolis, Sacramento, Cleveland, San Antonio, Portland, Oregon and Colorado Springs.

I am glad she has new affiliates, but they do seem to be on lower tier stations in the affected markets. It really doesn’t matter to me, if I listen to her, I listen on the Internet.

Would like to see how Mike Gallagher does in her place.

Spreading the word to as many Laura fans as possible who are
wondering where she’ll be starting today; I haven’t heard where those other 7 or so stations are but they should be
announced soon.

-—from radio-info.com BY TOM TAYLOR:
Today, it’s musical chairs for Laura Ingraham and Mike Gallagher.

In what Salem – which is losing TRN’s Ingraham and promoting its own Mike Gallagher – calls one of the biggest one-day audience surges in talk radio history. Friday morning, T-R-I told you that 17 Salem stations are dropping Ingraham, and then later we found out that both Salem and Talk Radio Network have been very busy bees. TRN identifies 10 new affiliates in the former Salem markets and promised to announce seven more – Seattle, Minneapolis, Sacramento, Cleveland, San Antonio, Portland OR and Colorado Springs – this week. (See the next story for the matchups.) While Salem has a list of more than 20 markets where its Salem Radio Network host Mike Gallagher will essentially replace Laura. Why the breakup? Neither side’s talking, beyond TRN boss Mark Masters telling me that “this was a business decision based on the continuing expansion of the show and the demand for it.” (Several T-R-I readers emailed me wondering whether Salem was asking for some kind of “comp.”) Masters and Salem still do plenty of business through other TRN talkshows, and Mark says “We continue to think warmly of Salem and our relationship with them.” But the Laura situation constitutes a real blowup that both sides hope can be contained. Masters smoothly says “Mike Gallagher is a great guy and a good broadcaster, and nobody deserves the opportunity to fill these vacancies more than him.” So about those vacancies –

Laura Ingraham’s making new affiliate friends today.

Last week she was loudly signaling to listeners in Salem markets that she’d be moving to a new frequency today, and here are the 10 we know about: In Los Angeles - Saul Levine’s KGIL at 1260. In Atlanta, JW Broadcasting’s WCFO (1160). In Phoenix, Embee’s KXAM (1310). In San Diego/Tijuana, Saul Levine’s XESURF (540). In Tampa, Genesis-owned WWBA (1040). In Denver, Crawford’s KLZ (560). In Orlando, Genesis-owned WAMT at 1190. In Louisville, Sports Zone Radio’s WAMT at 1570 (you wonder about a format adj ustment there). In Honolulu, Clear Channel’s KHBZ at 990. And in Hot Springs AR, Noalmark’s KPZA (590). Ingraham syndicator Talk Radio Network was making like sprinter Usain Bolt with the signups, and says it will also have new affils in seven other markets (Seattle, Minneapolis, Sacramento, Cleveland, San Antonio, Portland OR, Colorado Springs). TRN’s Mark Masters knows he’s helped nurture a talk radio star in the past five years since he signed Laura and gave her the daytime slot she so badly wanted. She’s now on 300+ stations. But some Salem-market losses will be tough to replace – like Philadelphia, where there are darn few options for talk, period.

Mike Gallagher’s making his own introductions today on 20+ Salem stations.

He’s immediately replacing Ingraham on Philly’s WNTP (990), for example. And Mike gets either new affiliations or better timeslots in places like Chicago (WIND at 560), Dallas (KSKY at 660), Houston (KNTH at 1070), Detroit (WDTK at 1400) and Seattle (KKOL at 1300). In Atlanta, he’ll upgrade to live clearance on Salem’s WGKA at 920, and the Journal-Constitution’s Rodney Ho spells out the changes to be wrought on WGKA, WCFO (where Ingraham’s going) and WFOM, which needs a new 10am-3pm setup. All these overnight flips demonstrate the advantage of being in Salem’s position – you both originate content and own the distribution. While Masters thinks of TRN more as a Pixar or HBO kind of boutique content creator, which does n’t own stations. This is great news for Mike Gallagher, who’s had an unimaginably trying Summer, with his wife Denise dying of endometrial cancer on June 29. It’ll be interesting to see what Mike says about his career and his fate – and also what Laura Ingraham says on her own show, which will now be opposite Gallagher in many cases. It should be a memorable week in talk radio - even without bringing Sarah Palin or hockey moms or pigs or lipstick into the mix.
