Ashes of 22 individuals found in barn

Sheriff's deputies on Wednesday discovered the ashes of 22 cremated individuals in an eastside barn, authorities said. The remains, found by deputies who were responding to an animal abuse call, were in boxes and still had identification cards attached to them, said Deputy Robert Darrell of the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services.

"All the remains we found were from the time period of 1988 to 1990, and it seems like instead of (a mortuary) turning the remains over to the rightful owners, they never made it to the relatives," Darrell said.

Officials said all the ashes came from Angeles Abbey Memorial Park in Compton.

The establishment had its license canceled in 1998 because it "couldn't pass (an) inspection," said Kevin Flanagan, a spokesman for the state Department of Consumer Affairs.

"All their cremation equipment was old and run down and when the owner passed away in 1999, they never received a new license," Flanagan said.

The establishment is now owned by a private religious group, he said.

"If a funeral establishment is in private hands, they don't need a license," Flanagan said. "I am not even sure if it (Angeles Abbey) still exists."

Referring to hundreds of cremated remains that were found three years ago at the Grand View Memorial Park in Glendale, Flanagan said it is not unusual for people to abandon relative's remains.

"You wouldn't believe how many people just forget to pick up the remains. It happens all the time," Flanagan said.

"Even when people move to a different place, they just leave the remains behind in the old home."

Actually that is true. People just dont deal with cremains. Had a friend that owned a morturary and this was a constant problem.

Oh no.... Some really macabre folks put Grandpa on the mantle like a shrine. The really twisted ones tuck him in the back of some cabinet.

Something like this was reported in North Carolina a year or two ago.

The guy was never cremating the corpses. He was issuing the families non human ash.

The bodies were being harvested and then disposed of. Who ever was doing the harvesting was just dumping them when throw in an empty lot.
