People Who Lose Jobs Become Hermits

Layoffs can turn social butterflies into near hermits who shun such outlets as book clubs and even church groups, finds a new study.

The researchers suggest the reason could come down to tit for tat, or an attitude of "you don't scratch my back, why should I scratch yours?"

"Social engagement often involves an element of social trust and a sense that things are reciprocal - that you give some support if you get some support, and you benefit from society if society benefits from you," said lead researcher Jennie Brand, a sociologist at UCLA. "When workers are displaced, the tendency is to feel as though the social contract has been violated, and we found that they are less likely to reciprocate."

Happened to me too. When we had our office closed for no logical reason it took me almost a month to get my head straight.

Yah, I’m in the middle of it and I keep asking people to pray for me.

Best part everyone knows I'm broke and insists on buying.

They haven't started running when they see you coming? ;-)

=====================================

They've been doing that for years but I'm pretty quick, although I have wondered why all my friends are so fat.

I have been searching for a week. We don’t have alot of money, but hopefully we won’t need alot up front. You wouldn’t know of a good lawyer, would you?

Two with time on their hands are John Edwards and Eliot Spitzer. Aside from them, no.

I’m in that situation at the moment, I guess it’s time to go back for a graduate degree.

If that will get you back in the game. Mike, in post #11, is on to something with his idea of going to some sort of trade school. That, at least, is faster and cheaper than more formal education that could take years to complete.

VA VocRehab lets you go back to school? I was temporarily disabled and SocSec VocRehab wanted to train me to become an office drone...but going back to school was not an option.

The worst though, is getting used to being together 24 hrs a day.

You married him for life, not for lunch. Right?

God bless you both.

Been there. I know exactly what they’re talking about.

Yup! If you have family, you are furtunate. If not, you are probably single and if you are in your mid to late 50's, you really don't have any friends because those that you did have eventually married and created families and lives of their own. You eventually found you had nothing in common with them..........

It ain't easy being single that late in life......

What’s worse is getting your contract terminated because you “violated company policy”,

No, what's worse is being discharged after 35 years of employment with the reason being "Unsatisfactory job performance over the past couple weeks". This being 16 days prior to your permanent layoff date as stated in the WARNA notice you received 6 weeks prior as a result of your plant closing.......

Thats one of the downsides of working in an "At Will" state........

For service connected disabilities VA Voc Rehab can pay for retraining or a college degree. They paid for my bachelor’s.

There is another kind of scratch involved; the kind that folds into a wallet.

Yep. Anything that requires you to lay out money has to be marked off your list. And yes, even book clubs require outlay, if nothing more then the gas to get there.

Um, well, I'd agree with you that it's tough being single, particularly if you're trying to raise children. It can be very lonely. But if you are in your forties or fifties and "really don't have any friends", there's something wrong, and you should be examining yourself to see what it is. Sure, the old friends get married, but there are a lot of other divorced and never-married people in our cohort with whom we can make friends. You should make friends with people of both sexes and have fun with them.
