My whole adult life I've waited for new modern operas to become great hits in the same sense of the classics.
However, I guess I'm now of the opinion that all the Hollywood-type production, direction and design (brilliant as it mostly is) is nothing without inspired music.....and indeed, that the former has vastly outshone the latter in today's Western-world opera.
