I have heard that the port of NO is so vital to the countries energy security that no matter what happens they will always build it back 13 feet below sea level or not. Sounds like a huge task to me.

The port of New Orleans will always be built back. They will need housing for people who actually work there. But it makes NO sense to rebuild welfare housing. The best thing FEMA could do is to declare that there will be NO Section 8 grants issued within 50 miles of New Orleans or the Louisiana coast

Sometimes when they get this strong even a land hit won’t knock them down much they sort of get a life of their own, even steering can get cornfused.

Gustav is just gonna shellack Havana. NE eyewall should pass over at least part of the metropolitan area.

IIRC, just before it hit landfall, Katrina dropped from a Cat 5 to a Cat 3. That seems to be typical when hurricanes first hit the shoreline.

It still did massive damage, however.

Am I the only one here who suspects that New Orleans Urban population—criminals, welfare cheats, prostitutes, drug users—will behave the same way again?

CNN has already had one woman on there complaining about how the evacuations are going....

Especially when the hurricane is still over warm water on both sides of the land mass which is where it is now on the west end Cuba.

well, Mac is really damned if he does or does not. Cancel the convention until when? After Hannah? How do you keep hotel rooms and convention center? Go on with the party while people suffer? or have RNC support Gus victims? I think it is a good move. I hope they show Katrina images and Gus images and how different it is with a Republican governor:)

In the meteorological discussion chat room they say that is not as likely with Gustave due to atmospheric conditions north of the storm.

That's a shame.

This one has my respect. I'm awed at the sheer power of it.
