Yeah, bless those guys. We had some Escondido guys at Katrina, so some of them are probably putting in their leave requests right about now. It’s that First Responder tradition, when the bell rings, you go.

I’ve noticed the big Atlantic storms rarely regain a western component to thier motion once it is lost. The trend seems to be to lose western motion and gain northern motion. Cuba is going to get hit hard.

My buddy says he doesnt know if Phoenix Fire is going....they got into a heap of trouble because they added Phoenix PD officers as escorts to NOLA....(after seeing the gunplay)....apparently that is a big no no.

It's strengthened more than NHC was forecasting, but they are often -- and sort of have to be -- relatively conservative with forecasts. I think most meteorologists, etc. saw the potential though. The water it crossed from Jamaica to Cuba is the most conducive for quick strengthening in the entire Atlantic basin. I suspected it would run at cat 4/5 in this area and I seem to have gotten lucky.

Very true, might go ahead and gas up, but a western jog seems very unlikely.

Stronger storms like to go poleward, and most end up doing so at some point. The reason this may not go due north or further east before landfall is because there is now a strong high pressure building into the mid-atlantic into midwest area. This location for the high pressure would tend to slow true northward progress and lead the storm to round the periphery of the high.

Well, we are going north if we have to go, then east to Shreveport and on to Jackson MS....so we won’t have to fight the massive transit on I-10 West....but I would like to get a head start if I could...BUT ONLY IF I NEED TO...I certainly do not want to leave...

Will it weaken significantly before landfall at Louisiana, do you think? People have been saying it might slow down but I don’t know if that translates to strengthening or weakening in that case.

I just read in a Yahoo news caption, this storm has already killed 85 people across the Caribbean. I hadn’t realized that.

I don't think Elle did(shes in Key west and I am in Islamorada) and I won't. We didn't even put the shutters up for this one. It's too far away and lucky for us it actually passed us as a two, but the wind is picking up some,a it's a dark dreary rainy day. In just a minute I will check the buoys.

Poor Toddville Rd that is where all the water piles up. No place to go. Well I think we will be OK on Gustav, but like eastforker said a move to the west and we are screwed. Glad you on the highend of Toddville you can handle a 12 ft surge there.

I hear ya! Right now it's looking like Louisiana, BUT ...

We'd be stupid not to pay attention and be ready to run at a moments notice. In the event of an evacuation the plan is to let us coastal folks go first. Hoping and praying we don't have to put that to a test. We'd head to Dallas if we have to leave. Getting all my wash done right now just in case.

When it hits 140 knots that’s 160 mph, a kick ass barely # 5 storm.
