My son was down here in Huntsville from his home in Chattanooga just this morning. Its a VERY nice area! Your son and his girlfriend might want to think about permanently relocating there.

Another consideration is that they are talking as though the storm has a good chance to stall there around New Orleans. It will dump tons of water if that happens!

How does Gustav compare with Camille so far? About the same or could it be even worse?

Since my son’s girlfriend is with Americorps and just started last month, I guess he’ll just do whatever she does at this point. She’s the reason he moved down to New Orleans....young love. Plus we’ll have to see what happens to each of their houses there.

The storm formed on August 14 and rapidly deepened. It scraped the western edge of Cuba at Category 3 intensity. Camille strengthened further over the Gulf of Mexico and made landfall with a pressure of 905 mbar (hPa), estimated sustained winds of 190 mph (305 km/h), and a peak storm surge of 24 feet (7.3 m); by maximum sustained wind speeds, Camille was the strongest landfalling tropical cyclone recorded worldwide, and one of only four tropical cyclones worldwide ever to achieve wind speeds of 190 mph (305 km/h). The hurricane flattened nearly everything along the coast of the U.S. state of Mississippi, and caused additional flooding and deaths inland while crossing the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia. In total, Camille killed 259 people and caused $1.42 billion (1969 USD, $9.14 billion 2005 USD)[2] in damages.

Hey sweet_diane! I'll keep an eye out for you as well. Didn't Alabama catch some of Katrina's wet wind? I know Mississippi did.

They just showed a Texas City man (Galveston Co.) on TV with a collection of buses for special needs folks in that area, just in case. He said he didn't think it would be needed in our area, but buses take so long to reach a destination they wanted to be prepared. In the event they don't need them they'll be sent to Beaumont to help with their evacuation. The mayor of Houston has been on TV, so our local officials are taking a very big interest in Gus.

The whole way Fox talks about this is just wacky. Some houses get destroyed in 50 MPH and some housed (mine) survived well over 150 MPH.

Construction matters.

isn’t that about the size of the katrina surge on the MS gulf coast? IIRC katrina hit during high tide as well, I could be wrong on that.

It pretty much obliterates anything not made of reinforced concrete, based on what structures survived the storm surge in MS.

During times like this, it helps to filter the chatter. Best to know the credentials of the talking heads before taking their “wisdom” as fact.

Glad the weather doesn’t seem to be so bad there so far, and I hope that continues.

Will the storm surge affect you?

There did appear to be a hiccup in the track where Gustov veered noticeably to the NE for about 12 hours, but subsequently resumed his NW track.

The ridge that is emminating SW out of the Great Lakes region into Mexico (crossing the NW portion of GoM) shows diffluent weakening; The ridge is expected to retreat well to the N. This will allow Gustov to continue NW. The Great Lakes high will subsequently extend a backing ridge behind Gustov accelerating him NW. The backing ridge's intensification, however, will impede Hanna's Westward component for several days until about Thursday.

Essentially my response to your question is: "Nope." That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.
