FR's Gun Club - Friday's Gun Porn
None | August 1, 2008 | Shooter 2.5

Posted on 08/01/2008 5:04:06 AM PDT by Shooter 2.5

This is one of the first installments from Free Republic's Gun Club. It's going to be a daily discussion on subjects covering firearms, Gun Rights and overall firearms experiences.

Some years ago, Friday seemed to be the time to post photos of our favorite toys. I volunteered to make it a weekly occurance.

One of the things I did learn through the years, though. It's not the gun. It's just a tool in the hands of the person who makes it happen. That rusty and pitted .38 revolver may not look like much but to the owner, it may have helped in getting out of a lot of scrapes. Also, that match pistol may look good but it might have been instrumental in losing more matches than the one half it's price and bone stock.

So let's see 'em. The pretty ones, the ugly ones and the dusty ones including the old favorite grampa gave us when he passed on.

I have a small collection of SKSs. Am missing the 49 Russian and one other. I have some Chinese including the Sino-Soviet and use these as shooters and they have been flawless.
Great buy BTW!!.

He must rely on blinding the competition before he even steps past the line.

PS: if this becomes a ping list, I'm in.

“I’m really sort of bummed about the cameras... “

I bought a Samsung L-60 6mp digital camera for my wife a couple of years ago at Sam's Club, $199. She leaned against it, and crushed the LCD. We sent it in to the warranty service folks, with a letter explaining how important it was too her, and how it got crushed (against her wheelchair), and asked how much it would cost to repair. They fixed it and sent it back. For free. Reason for repair was listed as “short circuit.” Yep, you crush the LCD, things WILL short circuit!

We've got two of them now, one for her, and one for me. She got the new one, since we expected it to be expensive to fix the old one, and I got hers when it came back. I will never buy another point-and-shoot digital camera that isn't Samsung. (I do hope, one day, to get a Canon digital that will take the lenses from my EOS Elan 7 SLR, however.)

A Samsung eh? I'll remember that because my youngsters sell a lot of stuff on e-bay and CraigsList and I can say with a fair amount surety that they won't be without a camera for long! :-) Thanks!

Oooooooooo Gun Porn! Please add me to the ping list.

My favorite started life as a Rock Island 1911. Not much to look at but it was affordable and accurate.

To me a Full Size Rock is like the 65 Chevy Chevelle SS ragtop I had. Kinda plain and inexpensive, but boy can they be tricked out! Off to the smith I go with a shopping list in hand.

First on the list is the sights. The stock sights just don't cut it with my tired eyes. Fiber Optic will fill the bill. And, for good measure, make 'em adjustable. Dawson Precision has a set that is just right . . .

Change it to an Ambi Safety. (Kings) This is mandatory for a southpaw like me. Now if I could only figure out a way to get it to eject to the left. [sigh] Some things will remain on the dream list.

Changing to a Commander style Hammer from Ed Brown with a trigger job. There was nothing wrong with the trigger, but it is part of the hammer change. All this is necessary in order to fit a beavertail.

Blend in a smooth Beavertail from Smith & Alexander. The goal is a smooth fit. Not so much that the beavertail is blended to the frame. I want it to look like the gun was built around the beavertail.

Just for looks, give it a Bobtail.

Refinish everything to a durable black finish. When offset with the light colored grips it should look real nice.

Speaking of Grips, Esmeralda. No contest. She has a basketweave pattern that gives a comfortable, sure grip. To me a checkered grip is just a bit too harsh. Besides, they flat-out look fantastic.

Here is how it turned out. Sorry my camera skills are a bit lacking . . .

Looks sweet, and shoots better than I can.

I do too. My point was, if a new ping list comes out of this, let cgk know ASAP so it can make the updated list.

Hey, TC; is that a Colt Woodsman ?

High Standard Sport King Mdl 102.

Best known for the Bond movie poster though never used in a film.

"Keep that finger off the trigger Mr. Bond, till your sights are on target and you've made a decision to fire!"

They are somewhat similar in size and appearance, both offered a variety of barrel lengths.

A friend back in Iowa has three of the Woodsman pistols. I guess they have become collector’s items.

Try Walmart. Last time I looked, they had a 7mp Samsung for $99. Looks like my L-60, but a little slimmer.
