NEW YORK, July 18 (Reuters) - The low-pressure system in the eastern Caribbean Sea north of Curacao and Aruba could become a tropical depression during the next day or two as it moves toward the oil producing U.S. Gulf Coast over the next several days, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said in its 2 a.m. EDT (0600 GMT) advisory Friday.

Most weather models predict the system will cross the Caribbean, hit Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, and reach the northern Gulf of Mexico in about five days.

It is too soon to tell where the system will make landfall, but the models point to a possible hit somewhere between Texas and Louisiana.

If the system manages to strengthen into a tropical storm, with winds of 39 to 73 mph, the NHC will name it Cristobal.

Weather is happening again?

No hurricane headed for NO?

Then just make up some hysterical report and publish it. Reuters? Journalists? You decide.

Why do they call them “invests”? Is it because any mention of a tropical storm in the Gulf is good for a $20/barrel increase in oil? Better they should call them “speculates”.

I have been in the Caribbean several times and have never been depressed - quite the opposite actually.

The increased distance from clueless Yankees in the MSM was very refreshing.

A tropical low pressure system that COULD possibly form into a tropical depression.
And who knows, this possible future depression COULD form a tropical storm. And this COULD form into a hurricane!!!!

It is somewhat amusing to see Reuters news service pouncing on even the slightest hint of a possible upcoming storm.

Reuters doesn’t understand that REAL news is when an actual hurricane is headed for our coastline.

I welcome any and all info about any possible storm in the gulf. It gives us that live on the GOM extra time to prepare. Would you rather they say nothing at all so as to catch people by surprise when it does become life threatening?

Hopefully it stays weak all the way up to TX; we’re in drought.

what i am saying is don’t panick the people and give the speculators a reason to raise prices before something that could or may become a depression happens. i think that where this disturbance is once it becomes a storm (if it does) the people including your self will have ample time to run for cover. i live in florida, have all my life 52 yrs of it and i haven’t been caught off guard by one yet.

perhaps they are concerned with the people in the hurricane areas to be prepared, letting them know something may be coming their way?

We don’t run for cover, we shelter in place and any heads up is welcome. I am thankful for the early warning systems that we have now with the internet rather than depending on local weather stations to inform us.

we are talking about a disturbance. i for one living in florida am tired of the panick they create on the news especially during a slow news day telling us that a disturbance may potentially develop. this particular one they have been telling us that now for almost a week. there are disturbances out there every day. tell me once it forms to a depression. at the depression stage i do believe that we will have more than ample time to prepare. you have to many people in florida and other areas now that panick at the drop of a dime.

I recall maw maw Blanco saying she did not know Katrina had changed direction, I like that they put it out there early, no excuses for another Katrina...FR was all over Katrina hitting NO, way before the media was. Anytime a storm gets in the gulf oil goes up, no matter when reported, but I understand your point.
