Was just watching Anderson Cooper's CNN show, which focused on the New Yorker's satirical Obama cover. One of the panelists, an African American gentleman whose name I missed, approvingly repeated a quote (I think from Ossie Davis) that the New Yorker cover is "America attempting to raise its ugly racist head, and we must be prepared to cut it off"!
I felt the rest of the panelists wince in shock, but they said nothing to condemn the remark. As you know, the New Yorker is a liberal magazine that was spoofing misconceptions about Obama, it is hardly a KKK periodical. Seemed like a hateful and inappropriate remark about America to me. My reaction is that this sort of comment can only hurt Obama with many Americans.
This is so sweet....the left is in deep conflict over appearing hip and “getting” the “irony” of The New Yorker cover, or condemning it for inadvertantly confirming the “fears” of those who “cling to their religion and their guns”.....I love it.
No, sounds like something Michelle Ma Belle would say...
Satire can reveal truth. This cover delivers 100%.
Wolf Blitzer on CNN was acting all out angry to the editor. Liberals hating liberals. What’s not to love!
What is so hilarious is that magazine is just so, well, “sophisticated” with their high art of satire, and we, by contrast are just such gap toothed unwashed and uneducated country bumkin rednecks, who don’t even read that stupid rag, and we don’t GET IT. We just see the picture and well, just dayum, whad I tell you Marge, it’s true!! Lookee there, they’re even burnin a flag in the fireplace!!
Wow, that worked out just real well, didn’t it?
And yet they could have had Dick Cheney as a cross-dressing Nazi Cannibal on the cover and Wolf wouldn’t have opened his filty spew-hole....
Hey, I shaved today.
I wonder could we compile all the msm cartoons and magazine covers showing Bush as a monkey, a nazi, a whatever....? Can we now look at all of these as having been poking fun at left wing extremists?
Naah, we’re just not that smart /s
Which is why I am lucky to have obtained the last copy in the store today.
I believe "The New Yorker" cover will take some votes away from Obama, and that certainly is good for America.
I don't know that at all.
Obama was taught the Koran despite being raised by an athiest mother, and he only became a "Christian" to boost his political career in Southside Chicago. Twenty years of applauding Reverend Wright definitely qualifies the B. Hussein Obamas as extremist America-haters.
So where's the "spoof" and what are the "misconceptions"?
Aren't reactions like this just the reason The New Yorker ran the cover. I mean, McCain hasn't raised any racial issues or made any accusation about Obama's background either on on Black Liberation Theology or Marxism. Someone has to get the ball rolling so all McCain supporters can be labeled as the vile miscreants everyone knows they are.
The New Yorker cover is just the latest version of the dingbat professor painting racist slogans on her own car and then phoning it in as a “hate crime,” the countless nooses and racial epithets attached to or painted on dorm room doors by their semi-deranged residents, who, upon getting fingered as the authors of the hate crimes directed at themselves, claim it was all an exercise in “performance art” designed to “raise questions” among the complacent white booj-wah-zie. Oh, and also get their names on the evening news, never a small consideration for these types.
As a Conservative, I don't feel vindicated about Obama. To me it's just another “poor Obama” moment for the bleeding heart white guilt liberals to latch on to.
I wonder what it's like to wake up every day being an ignorant unhappy progressive. On second thought, I don't.
Obama is the first to run for president of a generation of Americans taught throughout public school life that America’s heritage and history is something to be despised. He has plenty of company to vote for him.
It probably seems all too natural to his supporters that the flag should be burning and headed for the ash heap of history, and a new beginning of leftist utopia thus be enabled. That’s one of the salient grains of truth this cartoon reveals, but the magazine’s editors failed to see past their own spite for Obama doubters to realize what they were publishing. Just my perception.
Good analysis. I agree completely.
1.) This week's issue of "The New Yorker" sold out in a few hours at my local bookstores. Do you believe that these sales will encourage any future cartoons of Obama from other magazines?
2.) Given Obama's harsh reaction to the magazine, do you think "The New Yorker" will fall in line behind Obama or continue satirical drawings of him in the future?
3.) While it was intended as satire, do you think that there is an ulterior motive?
4.) Why is McCain being such a pandering wimp on this issue? Couldn't he have kept his big fat idiot mouth shut? Why is it so hard to say:
"I really don't know what to say, guys. It's a privately owned magazine that publishes articles, opinions and poetry. What difference does my opinion make on this matter?"
