SciFi Channel Producing first web-based (non-TV broadcast) Sci Fi Show
Sci Fi ^ | 7/13/08

Sanctuary is the first Web-based (non-televised) science fiction series. Starring Amanda Tapping (who is also an executive producer) and Robin Dunne, the show is billed on the official website as "The first broadcast caliber sci-fi series developed specifically for the Internet. . . ." Sanctuary uses state-of-the-art computer-aided graphic design for the majority of its scenes.

The premise of the show is one of science meeting the supernatural, as Dr. Helen Magnus (Amanda Tapping), who is well over 150 years old yet appearing only 35, seeks out and gives protection for (or in some cases, from) various creatures whom have heretofore gone unnoticed and unrecognized in a somewhat Gotham–style city, with occasional flashbacks to Victorian London. She is aided in her quest by assistant Will Zimmerman (Robin Dunne) and daughter Ashley (Emilie Ullerup).

The series aims to create an interactive world where fans can contribute and communicate with the creative team as the show progresses. Amanda Tapping has recorded greetings to invite fans to watch, and Emilie Ullerup has posted in the official website's forums. Damian Kindler, creator and executive producer of the show, also reads the forums and updates his blog regularly.

Each webisode will be around 15 minutes long, with three webisodes comprising one 45-minute episode. High definition downloads are available for a fee on the official website.

I suspect this type of programming will explode in the next several years as people spend all of their time in front of a PC.

I wondered how long Tapping could stay away from sci-fi after 10 years at StarGate.

About the only programs I watch on the Sci-Fi Channel are the Ghost Hunters and Ghost Hunters International. I can’t stand watching the movies they make. The graphics are so bad.

who is well over 150 years old yet appearing only 35,

The problem with this sort of thing is that if it lasts, in five years she'll look 40 ... so much for the slow again process.

She seems like a very nice lady but — she already appears well over 40.

I’m still watching reruns of SG-1 and I’m a little behind, but, so far, she looks better than I do at a bit over 40. Granted, I have no idea how old she really is. (It was more of a general point about characters that don’t age or age slowly being played by actors who age normally. Angel, for example.)

Googled her just now.

Born 1965 according to one source.

And I think a lot of those racy Amanda Tapping “images” are photoshopped. ;^)

The series will debut on Sci Fi Channel this fall. I've thought highly of Amanda Tapping. She's done wonderful work on both of the Stargate shows she's appeared on. We all wish her the best in her new role on Sanctuary.

I’m all for the whole idea of internet mini-series - I know Joss Whedon’s new one starts tomorrow =) It’s so much more convenient to watch stuff online, but it’s still nice to be able to sit down for dinner, turn on the TV, and have something interesting on.

However, since my experience has indicated that 99% of anything labelled ‘SciFi Channel Original _____’ is better described as ‘MST3K Fodder’, I’m a still a bit skeptical about this specific one.

Yes. It could eat a big hole out of the cable networks. Why pay $80/month for 200 channels when you only want a few.

They better start de-bundling or they’re going to get hurt.
