Help for Vista Home Premium (Vanity)
7/8/08 | peggybac

Does anyone recommend a fax software since it is not included in the Vista Home Premium? I've read a bit about Snappysoftware.com but would prefer opinions and suggestions from folks on FR. Thank you!!

It would be nice to know. However I have broadband and have never been able to fax from it. I think it works only with a modem and regular phone service.

I have seen faxing from email software but never tried it.

Some free ones (text only or attach a pdf) are Freefax.com and Mail2Web.com. Also, eFax.com has a free and pay service (it is good for receiving faxes in your email.

I'm an eFax customer and I've been happy with it. Like you mentioned, I get my faxes in an email, so I don't have to be waiting by a fax machine for a fax. Also, the interface to send out faxes is dead simple as well; it doesn't use a modem to send out faxes, but uses your existing internet connection.

Yes, MS does not include fax with Vusta home Baisic, nor is it on the OS disk as it was for XP and Win 98se. That is one of the reasons i choose to dual booted with XP.

i have tried no freeware fax for Vista HB. Your options would be to try these http://www.absolutelyfreebies.com/misc_free_stuff/free_faxing.html

Or try internet Fax:

FaxZero

“It’s free and lets you send a PDF or Word document to any fax number in the USA. FaxZero prints an ad on the coversheet, but leaves the main pages uncorrupted (Ad-free faxes are about two bucks). The test fax I sent arrived quickly and with a very crisp, clear resolution.

You’re limited to 2 free 3-page faxes a day, and your file attachment size limit is 10MB. The ad, while not something you’d like on professional business faxes, isn’t too bad - oh, and the cover sheet with the ad doesn’t count toward your 3 page limit. What do you use to send internet faxes? Let us know in the comments. — Gina Trapani

Another option is to get a free Live Cd of a Linux distro that has fax included. Puppy linux might have that, but you need to have a dial up modem connected. And sometimes they are not easy to configure. Write back for more help.

Sorry...you did ask for a review.

it's functional with a small foot print. you can trial it.
i like that it has “explorer” like management interface.

i don't know how much it's been enhanced since I last used it.

Try K7.net for incoming faxes...it’s a free fax to email system. Just use it once a month or so and maintain the same number. For outgoing fax give www.faxaway.com a try. Outgoing faxes are @ $0.10 a minute.

Well, I don't do Vista.

I would suggest, that if you're in need of a new printer, to get a good multi-function from Canon, HP, Epson.... that includes fax capabilities. They're able to operate stand alone from the PC or in conjunction with the PC.

As for on-line fax services; I'm wary of them regardless of their stated privacy policies. Faxes are usually used to send personal information and sending via the internet to a fax service just adds another avenue for interception. If it were encrypted for transmission to the fax service, and it used a strong encryption, it might lessen my paranoia, but I think I'll just stick with my multi-function printer.

I’m not sure if I understand the question. We have e-fax and broadband connection. Works great. Using XP on a Dell 8400.

I could receive and send faxes on my old computer with Windows XP. My hard drive died so I bought a new laptop with Vista Home Version and it doesn’t include faxing capabilities. I didn’t think I would need to fax anything but an opportunity has come up where I need one. In the Control Panel, under “Modems” it says I have HDAUDIO Soft Data Fax Modem with SmartCP and that the device is working properly. I guess I have to buy some more software or use an online fax service.

Also check out www.innoport.com. It’s a web based fax service (send from and receive into email - no fax modem required). I’ve been using it for about four years now and am very satisfied. At the time I signed up it was a better deal than efax, though I don’t know if that has changed.

Your modem manufacturer, PC maker, may have some free update of what came with your PC. If not, your Multi-Function printer/scanner/fax machine came with some, as well. Most are offering free updates for Vista.

Have you looked on your PC Maker’s website?

I’m going to look on the website and check it out. I was thinking about using an online service but someone above mentioned the security aspect so I’m going to look elsewhere. The printer I just bought is a printer/scanner/copier but no fax, unfortunately. Thanks.

Pegbac:

Can you tell me the Brand Name and model id numbers of your laptop? These are probably on a sticker on the bottom of it.

Thanks

It is a Compaq Presario F767NR Notebook. I think it cost almost 200.00 to upgrade from Vista Home.

I find this driver on Compaq/HP's website for the Conexant HDAUDIO Soft Data Fax Modem with SmartCP.

The description of it is as follows:
Release Date: 2007-11-12 Version: 7.67.0.0 A
Description
This package contains the driver for the Conexant HDAUDIO Soft Data Fax Modem with SmartCP in the supported notebook models and operating systems. This driver enables dial-up functionality and provides a user interface for modem setup.

PURPOSE: Routine
Operating system(s): Microsoft Windows Vista, Microsoft Windows Vista Starter, Microsoft Windows Vista (64-bit), Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium (64-bit), Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic (64-bit), Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic (32-bit), Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium (32-bit)

Download file size: 22.23M
Installation Instructions
1. Download the SoftPaq .EXE file to a directory on your hard drive.
2. Execute the downloaded file and follow the on-screen instructions.

* Download file(s) to install later:» sp37709.exe 1/1 (22.23M)

Have you tried to uninstall and then reboot, and then reinstall the driver for the modem?
After making sure your modem and drivers are installed, follow these instructions...

Step1
Connect your computer's dial-up modem. Check that your phone line is securely connected to your computer.
Step2
Click the Vista "Start" button, select "All Programs," and then select "Windows Fax and Scan."
Step3
If you haven’t sent a fax before, the Fax Setup Wizard will appear. Follow the on-screen instructions to set up your computer to send and receive faxes.
Step4
When the fax program opens, click "Tools," and in the dropdown menu select "Fax Accounts" and click on "Add" to complete the process of establishing the fax. connection.
Step5
To send a fax, select "New Fax" on the toolbar and enter a recipient and fax number when the window opens. The "To" field in the fax window is linked to addresses stored in Outlook or in the Windows Address Book so it can easily retrieve your contact's fax number and enter it in this field. Manually enter the name and number if it's not in the address book.
Step6
Enter your fax message, then hit "Send." You've sent a fax in Vista.

Thank you so much for helping me. I already have the HDAUDIO Soft Data Fax Modem with SmartCP included. There is no Fax and Scan in the Programs. That was my first clue when I was looking for the Fax Wizard. In fact, that is the only thing with the word, “fax” in the whole system After reading several message boards on the web, it looks like those of us with only the Home Version are screwed because there are a lot of pissed off people writing about it. I really appreciate your help.
