Sad story. Prayers offered up.
Is this posted here for the prayer pings, or for a discussion of public policy issues related to doing risky activities while not having insurance? I can play it either way...
Most unfortunate. It’s my nature to attempt solutions: a timely bankruptcy for the Roysters, a large judgment against Miss Hash, powerful prayers for recovery, and so forth. And I’m quite disappointed in Cat, though probably not surprised. But in the scheme of things, how can these people be made whole?
Does she have any stuff? A job?
OK. Everyone is going to jump down my throat for this but here goes.
These people had NO insurance. But since they used the money they saved on insurance to buy a motorcycle and go play instead...they get to have the taxpayers pick up the bill?
I wouldn’t wish this on anyone. The driver of the car should be paying but THEY chose to be irresponsible as well.
A sad situation, however all parties involved behaved irresponsibly and that is why they are in this situation.
And now we the tax payers are going to have to pay.
Years ago, before mandatory insurance was all the rage, there were studies done showing how a small fee added to the price of a gallon of gas could provide every driver with a minimum of insurance from an insurance pool. Wonder whatever happened to those proposals?
No one should jump down your throat for that statement, it is perfectly rational and defends properly the oft neglected taxpayers/policyholders left holding the bag for the irresponsibility of others.
Plus, two parents, responsible for supporting 3 kids, on a motorcycle...the same motorcycle.
I too feel sorry for these folks, but sometimes the consequence of irresponsibility is disaster.
“Wonder whatever happened to those proposals?”
Hopefully they went into the ash heap of stupid ideas where they belong.
Insurance that does not consider risk encourages risky behavior.
Not everyone...
There are a lot more bikes on the road with these high gas prices. Expect to hear more of the same. Three or four times a day a rice-rocket slips between the lanes to get to the light (which is legal) and I wonder when one is going to splash a side mirror. Specifically those found on Ford trucks and newer Chevys.
“Insurance that does not consider risk encourages risky behavior.”
Why am I instantly reminded of the annual California-Wildfire fest?
Last I heard, the risk premiums for those who are allowed to live in their desert paradise tinderbox is shared nationally.
You’re correct about the personal responsibility part, IMHO. The Roysters had only liability insurance — which is fine if you have enough money or other insurance to pay for your medical treatments.
Insurance itself is socialist — from each according to his ability to each according to his need. But almost all of us buy into isurance, and the ones who don’t are either extremely “self-insured” or extremely foolish.
SSI, and Social Security, are programs of insurance-by-theft, coerced insurance, and also socialist. It really pays to have money in this world.
The answer to your question is pretty clear in reply #1.
Feel free to "play it" anyway you want to.
Last month, my parked car was smashed into and totalled by an uninsured motorist. They get off scott free because no ability to pay. I would think they should get AT LEAST some sort of mandatory jail time.
