OK. Everyone is going to jump down my throat for this but here goes.
These people had NO insurance. But since they used the money they saved on insurance to buy a motorcycle and go play instead...they get to have the taxpayers pick up the bill?
I wouldn’t wish this on anyone. The driver of the car should be paying but THEY chose to be irresponsible as well.
A sad situation, however all parties involved behaved irresponsibly and that is why they are in this situation.
And now we the tax payers are going to have to pay.
No one should jump down your throat for that statement, it is perfectly rational and defends properly the oft neglected taxpayers/policyholders left holding the bag for the irresponsibility of others.
Plus, two parents, responsible for supporting 3 kids, on a motorcycle...the same motorcycle.
I too feel sorry for these folks, but sometimes the consequence of irresponsibility is disaster.
Not everyone...
There are a lot more bikes on the road with these high gas prices. Expect to hear more of the same. Three or four times a day a rice-rocket slips between the lanes to get to the light (which is legal) and I wonder when one is going to splash a side mirror. Specifically those found on Ford trucks and newer Chevys.
You’re correct about the personal responsibility part, IMHO. The Roysters had only liability insurance — which is fine if you have enough money or other insurance to pay for your medical treatments.
Insurance itself is socialist — from each according to his ability to each according to his need. But almost all of us buy into isurance, and the ones who don’t are either extremely “self-insured” or extremely foolish.
SSI, and Social Security, are programs of insurance-by-theft, coerced insurance, and also socialist. It really pays to have money in this world.
I’m not, plus I’m throwing the BS flags on this story
1.) Insured Illinois drivers already pay an uninsured/under-insured motorist premium to cover for irresponsible drivers, such as Ms. Hash.
This is a tragedy of their own making.
2.) They only carried liability on the motorcycle.
3.) They hold home mortgage without disability insurance.
Reminds me of the life insurance axiom: Make your death a REAL tragedy, die without life insurance.
Cheers,
OLA
As a biker of 35+ years, I am in complete agreement with you.
This is sad, but they didn't have to ride a motorcycle without insurance. They gambled and lost. Why are we supposed to fund others' gambling losses?
