PARIS (AFP) Recent massive volcanoes have risen from the ocean floor deep under the Arctic ice cap, spewing plumes of fragmented magma into the sea, scientists who filmed the aftermath reported Wednesday...

Sheesh.
Can't think of anything. Must be Global Warming.
Actually, you're not far off the mark. Scientist believe that the thinning ice at the poles allows more harmful UV light to penetrate to greater depths. This in turn, cause an increase in the seabed temperature. Since the mantel is thinnest in the polar regions (Dr. Leaon Garaiboski, U of Moscow, 1923-1969; "The Influences of Variable Mantel Thicknesses on Magma Concentrations, pgs 577 - 624), magma is more likely to surface in these newly warmed areas. Unless something to reverse this trend, drilling in arctic regions is likely to give us more volcanos than oil.

What a bunch of unadulterated BS. Exactly how many more watts/m**2 do you expect hitting the seafloor?
Answer: Approximately 0.
People are so da* dumb, they’ll believe it.
It’s no longer Bush’s fault ... anything happeneing is spun to be “global warming” fall out.
Undersea volcanoes in the Arctic have caused islands to form and islands to disappear...a pattern that will likely continue.
It must be the fault of those damnable Vikings that settled in Greenland a thousand years ago - running all over in their SUV's
Actually it only take a relatively minute amount to trigger the process. And the fact that volcanic activity is happening coincident with the thinning ice substantiates the theory.
Can you explain to me, a poor ignorant reader, how in the hell sunlight could cause a volcano?
It doesn't so much cause a volcano as it encourages conditions for it's formation.

Here’s an alternate data point:
The temperature of lava is 2,000 degrees.
That’s 10 times the boiling point of ... water!
Perhaps that’s causing the ice to melt?
But then, what would liberals tax?...
How would liberals, blame American capitalism?...
How?
So much for the tectonic plate, molten core theory. I guess a little hot rock from the earth’s core has no effect on heating up the water a bit. Silly me for thinking so.
I see no calculation of the amount of ‘global warming’ gases released in these eruptions. Even with some of it being absorbed into the ocean it was probably more gas than is released by mankind in the previous year, maybe years. Conspicuously absent facts.
Which, of course, explains why there are more volcanoes at the equator than elsewhere and why, throughout history, there were more volcanoes during hot times than cold - NOT. What nonsense.
Four undergrad geology classes and I never heard about that. While not an expert, I know more about rocks than the average bear.
Magma is hot enough that a few degrees of sunlight hitting the ocean floor isn’t going to make a bit of difference in whether or not it breaks through. Has more to do with pressure than temperature.
Something is being done to reverse this trend, A recent study from the University of Earth Hotness, has found that dumping large amonts of sunblocker into the artic oceans caused the volcanoes to quiet down within minutes.
This is called the “Dump Sunblocker to Block the Sun Effect”. go to this link, www.ultra/really/violent/raze.huh?
This is odd, I Googled the thinning ice and UV line first and nothing close; I then Googled the title of the pub you posted and nothing matched; next I Googled the author and Googled questioned the spelling.
Even more curious is the fact that I got a direct hit in each case on this thread.
Are you practicing?
Well, leave it to an Old Professer to do his research. I was reasonably certain FReepers were too astute to buy into such a lame theory. On the other hand, it would probably be the rage over at DU.
Well played. I lay my king down.
“Actually it only take a relatively minute amount to trigger the process.”
Please cite a relevant paper or other academic reference, I’d appreciate it. Based on everything I know, this is the purest hogwash. :-)
“And the fact that volcanic activity is happening coincident with the thinning ice substantiates the theory.”
Of course not. Correlation is not causation.
