NHK smashes the 4K image barrier ( ultra-high-definition format.)

In today's world of broadcasting and commercial display technologies, video resolution seems to be the name of the game as we progress from full-HD to 4K (3,840 x 2,160 pixels), and now 8K (7,680 x 4,320 pixels) ultra-high-definition format. Developed by NHK, this Japanese prototype system is capable of displaying 32 megapixels' worth or 16 times more details than any consumer panel.

The theater on demonstration at CommunicAsia comprises two LCoS projectors with a combined 8,000 lumens brightness and a towering 6.6m x 3.7m 300-inch projection screen. If you think that is impressive, wait till you have a go at its triple-tier 22.2-channel cinema sound system. We're talking dual subwoofers, three, 10 and nine speakers at the bottom, screen level and overhead.

To reproduce the brilliant image clarity, the Japanese broadcaster has also developed a matching 8K studio camera, hard drive recorder and a high-bandwidth optical transmission system via IP networking. If you've missed this once-in-a-lifetime experience, you could visit Japan's Kyushu National Museum and pop by its Theater 4000 equipped with the same 300-incher instead.

This ain’t fer home theater — it’s for the movie houses on Friday and Saturday night, and for football stadiums, etc. And most of all for Hollywood, which will produce and distribute its products 99 per cent digitally in not very many years.

Years ago, in one of the Mac mags, one of the SuperMac Technology guys was interviewed. He’d been involved in the committee that was hammering out high-def TV standards, and when asked about how that was going and what impact it would have on computer video, he stated that it seemed to him that it is more important to improve what’s *on* TV rather than how nice it looks. :’) I mean, really, does anyone think a high-def Katie Couric is going to improve the viewing experience?

How many channels are there, hundreds? Instead of better quality, we're getting watered down everything. Remember when the news was an hour and that was enough. If you wanted more, you watched Press the Meet or Buckley or some such once a week.

Now some blonde disappears in Podunk, ND and her story goes 24 hours straight on Greta and everyone else. There's not enough content to fill all those channels.

The hews nets are parading one talking head after another to fill 3 hours of election coverage when a candidate wins by 30%. They have to fill the time.

What brand are those old TV's? The Lincolnshire 25 incher reminds me of our 1982 Zenith which we bought new and is still in use as our main daily watcher TV.


1964? Sony B&W with HDTV box on top. I think it was made in 1964, someone told me that they saw the same TV in the Beatles' movie, "A Hard Day's Night."

Green Acres...aah, what fun. I am building a collection of Green Acres DVDs (I have the first few seasons). I also have all but the last season of Hogan’s Heores (I’ll buy the last season shortly).

"Hogan's Heroes" is also on RTN. I know it is on Comcast, but why "feed the cable pig" when I can get it over the air? I also watch "The Fugitive" on it. I also like "To Catch a Thief" as well.

Watching RTN, I have a weird sense of irony. In 1983, my 16 year old self sat on the couch at 8 PM Sundays to watch Knightrider on our 1982 Zenith System III. Now it's 2008 and my almost 42 year old self sits on the couch at 8 PM on Sundays watching Knightrider on the same 1982 Zenith System III. It's just kind of funny. B-D

Only if you look at the “nominal” dollars. If you take account of inflation,today’s 25 inch flat panel costs only 1/4 of what the old tube TV costs. But the quality of today’s programming is 1/4,000 of what it used to be.
