Kid Rock is part of an exclusive club whose only other members are The Beatles, Garth Brooks, and AC/DC. What do thse artists have in common? They're major artists whose music isn't sold oniTunes. In Kid Rock's case there is actually one album being sold by the online music giant, but that's just because he doesn't own the rights to it.
So why doesn't he want to sell his music on iTunes? It's simple really. He sees it as simply a continuation of the way labels have treated artists for decades. In his words, "iTunes takes the money, the record company takes the money, and they don't give it to the artists"
In a recent interview with the BBC he talked about his reaction to Atlantic Records executives asking him to take a stand against file sharing. "Wait a second," he said, "you've been stealing from the artists for years. Now you want me to stand up for you?"
"I was telling kids - download it illegally, I don't care. I want you to hear my music so I can play live."
Yep. It used to be that live shows were to promote records, where the real money was. Now with tickets over starting at $55 and going up to 500 or more, a band can make over a million playing a medium sized indoor arena. The records exist to generate ticket sales.
Too bad Kid Rock sucks. $0 is still a rip-off.
I ripoff software, news articles, manuals and movies by the score; music deserves no more respect than the other intellectual properties.
Except for the fact that if the artist deals with iTunes directly, the ARTIST gets the money.
LOTS of indie acts have discovered that about iTunes.
Sounds like Kid Rock is a moron.
In other words, you're proud to engage in criminal activities.
Hey! Wouldn't it be neat if the Feds nailed your ass?
Why should the lack of respect for intellectual property stop at music?
Kid Rap bites the big one. His noise is trash.
Too bad Kid Rock sucks. $0 is still a rip-off
His music is not my taste, but I like the fact that he supports the troops big time.
I suppose one can stretch generatlities far enough such that Kid Rock and the Beatles might fit into the same sentence.
Yes, you are correct. The real money stream for artists now days is through Live shows, Merchandise, and branding. The recordings now serve more as a advertising medium than a profit center. The artists doing well have adapted to these market changes that computers created.
To each his own, I think Kid Rock is great. I love his stuff that he did with Bocephus (Hank Jr.)
His new album is pretty good but not as good as his previous stuff.
The guy really supports our troops and is involved with the USO. He has toured Iraq and Afghanistan several times.
Almost all artists make the real money from touring... difference is Metallica catches you illegally downloading their songs they’ll sue you for it.
let me know when he dumps the cRap music.
Or bound by a contract with his record label company which very likely enjoins him from dealing directly with iTunes.
Which would make him...not a moron. And neither are the recording label lawyers.
Despite his abomnable taste in women, Kid Rock is/was very popular with the military, Especially the Marines, and and I say good for him!
