is the "Knob and tube" style wiring in the overhead.
Common in the states prior to WWII, it involved separate conductors carried by porcelain "knobs" ( as you see them ) and tubes run through beams and walls.
The corrugated steel overhead seems to imply that they drove the shaft first, and then lined it.
It's certainly interesting.
