"He had been reported planning to leave ever since Germany absorbed Austria March 13.

Fearful of difficulties in getting across the frontier out of Germany, Dr. Freud asked newspaper men not to publish details of his departure until he had had time to get out of the country."

If I remember, by 1938 the majority of Germany Jews had already fled Germany, though some didn't go far enough to escape capture during the war.

Austrian Jews had just over a year to escape, and most didn't make it in time. And very few of those who didn't escape survived the war.

It's curious to me that these news reports focus on well known Jews like Freud, while ignoring the hundreds of thousands of others who lacked Freud's wealth and international supporters.

Then as now, and as it ever has been, its a different world for people with juice than for people without it.
