This afternoon my husband set up a computer for the kids. Once everything was set up, he checked to make sure all computers were connected to the net via the router. All looked great!
Then one of the kids downloaded some type of crap that has caused our internet connection to be kaput. I contacted our internet provider after testing they determined that the problem was not within the cable box. (Each computer can connect to the internet if hooked up directly to the cable box). They gave me the customer service number to the router company ~ the gal said they could check to see if it was a router problem. The customer service lady for Linksys said that since our router is about eight years old it was out of warranty, but for a mere $32.95 they could have a tech check out the problem. (After a few colorful words from my husband) We went out and purchased a new router for $25.00.
The problem still exist. (I have not yet recontacted the router company.)
Each individual system can connect to the internet via the cable box. When all systems are connected to the router, there is no internet connection.
We have tried the basic turn it off, turn it on again ~ with no luck.
Does anyone have a clue how to fix this problem?
It's not a router. Manual here.
That raises the question of what capabilities the Comcast cable modem box has. Sometimes they will come with a router built in. If not, you will want to put a real router between the cable box and your computers (both so that you can have more than one computer share the connection and to provide firewalling).
Limewire has been uninstalled from the kid computer & any kid admin rights have been taken away.
That’s a default linksys router address, if I recall correctly.
I've been setting up networks since before ethernet was invented, and I don't recall ever having to worry about DHCP lease times causing loss of connections.
Could be. I am a neophyte . Fixed 2 linkxys systems on my own. If you don’t have kids and you don’t have X box , it’s a whole nother lifestyle. I could give a flying fartola who likes what, am just discusssingmy experiences because that’s how Mom’s solve problems.
Don’t speak the lingo and don’t want to.
G’nite, it’s late.
Reset each computer in turn.
Ya gotta get back to a baseline
Errr...ummmm....have you tried connecting the doomaflatchie to the dealie and telling the system to do that...you know...rosebud thingie?
Hope you get it fixed. I'm useless at things like this!
Well.... Thats a good idea. Go to the last thing that was touched
TheMom -- You might not need a new thingie. The old one might be just fine, with a little tender loving care.
As these new OS's come out, they use ever more complex security protocols. sometimes the router will not hook up properly to the ones with the new OS.
The fix is to raise the security level to WPA from WEP on the entire network, assuming the router will allow it. This sometime require the purchase of a new router, or the reconfig of the default options on the new computer to WEP from the default WPA. It is lees effective security, but you need to do one or the other.
And if they still complain after that take away the basket ball and hoop and give them a rock and a stick.
Well, I can’t guess. Because I only have one. I don’t care about a 99% satisfaction rate or anything like that. Mine is the only one I care about. After reading at least 5 dozen negative reviews here:

where either folks were happy with it, or they had given up and thrown THIS PARTICULAR MODEL, which is all I can speak to, into the trash out of frustration, I bought another router, plugged it in with NO setup, and it worked and has worked flawlessly since then
Doomaflachie?!!! LoL Good Lord only I know that word!!
It seems to me, that you are correct about one thing for sure. That there is a missing piece of info and it is causing some problems diagnosing the issue.
They tend to be found in car engines also.
Yup, definately NOT a router. I FReepMailed you earlier. Call me if you like.
