It happens all he time when machines with different OS's are hooked up by inexperienced users. It happened to me when I added a new machine with Vista to a old network. It does not happen when all are on XP, unless one does not have the revision 2.

As these new OS's come out, they use ever more complex security protocols. sometimes the router will not hook up properly to the ones with the new OS.

The fix is to raise the security level to WPA from WEP on the entire network, assuming the router will allow it. This sometime require the purchase of a new router, or the reconfig of the default options on the new computer to WEP from the default WPA. It is lees effective security, but you need to do one or the other.

why your computer likely lost it’s connection. The router alows a connectio to the new network for a specific lenth of time, usually in minutes.

That is what you wrote earlier ... it reads to me like a discussion of DHCP lease times.

This is making about as much sense to me as if you had started trying to talk about timing problems when someone couldn't unlock their car door, and then, when I said that didn't make sense, you replied by explaining that it happens all the time that different cars use different tire sizes.

WPA from WEP

And by the way, she's not using wireless. There ain't no way she's using wireless with that old router or that new switch. So discussions of WPA versus WEP aren't relevent here.
