The model # of the new thingie (not so sure it is a router anymore) is EZXS55W. It's not a router. Manual here.
That raises the question of what capabilities the Comcast cable modem box has. Sometimes they will come with a router built in. If not, you will want to put a real router between the cable box and your computers (both so that you can have more than one computer share the connection and to provide firewalling).

Limewire has been uninstalled from the kid computer & any kid admin rights have been taken away.

LOL.....Good idea, my kid got involved in that one a few years back. I had to let him finally learn on his own that it was not a good idea. Kids like free stuff, that is quasi illegal, and now it is definitely illegal. A girl in Minnesota was just fined and sued for over 100K.

so that your new computer will maintain it's lease
I rather doubt that this is an issue here.
I've been setting up networks since before ethernet was invented, and I don't recall ever having to worry about DHCP lease times causing loss of connections.

Could be. I am a neophyte . Fixed 2 linkxys systems on my own. If you don’t have kids and you don’t have X box , it’s a whole nother lifestyle. I could give a flying fartola who likes what, am just discusssingmy experiences because that’s how Mom’s solve problems.

Thats a default linksys router address, if I recall correctly.
I'm pretty sure that (1) she doesn't have a router, (2) if she had connection problems between the PC and router, the PC would not be showing the routers address, default or otherwise, in its ipconfig output, and (3) the default Linksys IP addrs start with
192.168, not
169.

Reset each computer in turn.
Scan back through the last hundred posts -- you'll see that this has been suggested multiple times, and that she has done it multiple times. She'll be wearing out the dang reset button at this rate. <

try putting the old router back in an resetting it.
Good point.
TheMom -- You might not need a new thingie. The old one might be just fine, with a little tender loving care.

It happens all he time when machines with different OS's are hooked up by inexperienced users. It happened to me when I added a new machine with Vista to a old network. It does not happen when all are on XP, unless one does not have the revision 2.
As these new OS's come out, they use ever more complex security protocols. sometimes the router will not hook up properly to the ones with the new OS.
The fix is to raise the security level to WPA from WEP on the entire network, assuming the router will allow it. This sometime require the purchase of a new router, or the reconfig of the default options on the new computer to WEP from the default WPA. It is lees effective security, but you need to do one or the other.

If they complain about the dial-up connection, take the computer away, buy them a basketball and hoop instead. And if they still complain after that take away the basket ball and hoop and give them a rock and a stick.

Windows Vista won't let that stuff in.
Think again. Vista is better, but far from perfect. It still needs to be heavily configured in order to be truly malware-proof. Meanwhile, OS X is malware-proof out of the box.
I understand they recently proved the OS could be hacked in 30 seconds or less......LOL.
Your recollection of the PWN2OWN contest is flawed. Check out the FR thread on it.

Hmmmmmm.......Not sure, but it looked like a gateway addy....May have come from the ISP...I dunno.....
It seems to me, that you are correct about one thing for sure. That there is a missing piece of info and it is causing some problems diagnosing the issue.
