Comcast is our ISP. We have had no problems with two computers and an XBox ~ it was when the third computer was added (and one child downloaded stuff) that the problem started.

Good -- so it looks like this, right:

Next step will be to figure out what lights are lit on it.

However your "get a different thingie" is probably a better next step, because it is not safe to connect Windows boxes to Comcast using Switches. They don't provide any Firewall protection from incoming bad guys.

Xactly what happened to me ! XOX LIVE DOES NOT WORK ON Verizon Fios without it’s own router. They too are involve in a Lawsuit with MSN.
My Xbox is being repaired in Texas right now.
Lime wire and Xbox live is a double whammy!

The download and the loss of connection are not likely related in this case.

I agree with the recommendation to replace the switch with a real router.

I like the Linksys routers. They are easy to work with, have good features, good quality and good value. They have some features that can be useful on cable systems, like a user-settable MAC address.

The worst router I've seen recently was by D-Link. It was missing useful features like "DMZ". I had to configure the port forwarding manually, which was a nuisance.

That’s your problem you don’t have a router you just have a switch. I have DSL through CenturyTel. My DSL modem goes to a Belkin Wireless N router/switch ( model #F5D8233 ), and from there I run it to a Netgear JFS-524 to connect the rest of the network. You need a some kind of wireless router with a built in switch so you can use more than one computer at a time. By connecting your computer directly to the internet through only a switch and the cable modem you were “E-X-P-O-S-E-D” to the internet with only the minimal “protection” your ISP provides

I bot a $19 Netgear router and it worked on first plug in and has stayed working for 8 months flawlessly.

Agree that Linksys is mostly crap that never works like the manual says it should.

Netgear is OK.

Yes, I'm sure that the reason that Cisco bought Linksys was because they manufacture "mostly crap."

Everyone is using anecdotal evidence for "grading" the quality of these devices. OK, here's my anecdote. I've used a Linksys router at home for nearly 3 years, and this one replaced another linksys. Not because of any problems: I just decided that I wanted wireless capabilities, and since the wireless router was on sale, it was cheaper than just buying a WAP. Oh, and I've had 2 cousins and my step-mother using Linksys routers for a number of years too. And I've recommended Linksys routers for about the last 5 or 6 years (before the last 2 1/2 years) that I worked as a network and systems engineer. Oh, and in the last 2 1/2 years, I've been a network administrator, and we had about 550 remote locations using Linksys routers until we migrated them to a Cisco VPN WAN network.

And did I mention that I haven't had a single problem with any of those Linksys routers?

My guess is that one reason that it seems a lot of people have problems is that Linksys might just sell a whole lot more of those devices than anyone else. Just a guess.

Mark

You sure you havent been surfing porn sites?

It might have been Mojo surfing puppy porn! He is the only male dog that has not been "fixed". PITA, the only female dog that has not been "fixed", is now in heat. Even though we keep the two seperated, Mojo is acting like a real HornDog.

Every Linksys I have owned will hook up to anything. I have switched ISP's a half dozen times.

The major issue seems to be in between the users ears.

Yeah... Most of it I could read, though I doubt it will lead to a solution. The bold sentence about ethernet addresses starting with 169 was Greek to me too.

Hey Mom....

Did you get my post about hooking your old router back up, and letting one of us ground guide you through the set up so that your new computer will maintain it's lease on the router and not drop off as it apparently did.
