Hydrox Redux: Cookie Duels Oreo, Again
The Wall Street Journal (excerpt, subscription) ^ | May 28, 2008 | Christopher Rhodes

Excerpt -

Hydrox, the defunct chocolate-sandwich wafer, is returning for one more rematch with its nemesis, the Oreo.

Bowing to more than 1,300 phone inquiries, an online petition with more than 1,000 signatures and Internet chat sites lamenting the demise of the snack, Kellogg Co. has decided to temporarily relaunch Hydrox, the left-for-dead cookie.

WSJ's Christopher Rhoads speaks to Adam Najberg about Hydrox cookies, and why consumers are fighting to bring back the defunct chocolate-sandwich wafers. (May 28)

"These loyalists can be proud to know they've been heard," says Brad Davidson, head of Kellogg's snack division.

Kellogg quietly killed off Hydrox in 2003, ceding victory to its longtime rival, Oreo, made by Kraft Foods Inc.'s Nabisco unit. Many Hydrox eaters initially thought their cookie had just become more difficult to find, learning only much later that the cookie had been discontinued. The online mourning and efforts to bring it back were the subject of a page-one article in January in The Wall Street Journal.

I always liked Hydrox far better than Oreos.Maybe if I lose some weight and,as a result,my blood sugars return to normal I can have an occasional bunch of them.

Oh, the cookie. I thought this was a “Find-a-substitue-name-for-Obama’s-race” thread.

A bunch of us here had a lengthy discussion about Hydrox cookies not too many months ago... I wonder if someone picked up on that.

Reminds me of the Drew Carey episode where they hold a huge party to get rid of all their beer because no one is buying it (small company thing - not homebrew). Anyway - EVERYBODY comes with appearances from the real Mayor of Clevland, Little Richard, Steve Miller (?) and all sorts of other famous folks.

After the party they keep getting calls from people to buy their beer. The dumb guy tells the callers they quit making it cuz they weren’t selling any. Says something like “And just today I’ve had 30 calls! But I solved the problem. I disconnected the phone!”

“I always liked Hydrox far better than Oreos.”

Me too! I always thought the chocolate wafer was far superior to the Oreo. We only shopped at the Commissary growing up and the Hydrox was what was always brought home. The few times I tried the Oreos at friend’s houses I did not enjoy them as much.

The new filling tastes terrible

Boy could not agree more! I remember in the "old days" when the centers were not as slimy/creamy and had, imo, more flavor. They were a little on the sugary side--- sort of what people think of as bad fudge consistency. Really great! I don't why, but they changed the formula, and ever since they've never been as good.

There WAS a Hydrox Cola! I remember my dad buying a few cases of it. It always made think of rocket fuel.

. Wasn't there that lawyer who threatened to sue them unless they got rid of the transfats in the filling ? They did, and they've never been the same.

Aint no equal to an Oreo. Especially the Double Stuffed. The cookie taste itself is awesome and the filling? Wow. Wish I had been close when that truck overturned with all the Oreos scattered on the road. I can’t remember. Was anyone hurt in that accident? If so I’m sorry and hope they are on the road to recovery. I guess I didn’t really read the article or I would k now this information but...it was the site of all those cookies in packs lying there with no one to eat them and no glasses of milk ANYWHERE!!! :)

YES YES YES, those were my favorite! Lemon coolers! I used to let the cookie just sit on my tongue until it got soft, then chew it up. That lemon was soooo goood with the powdered sugar.
