NEW YORK (AP) Tony Soprano is shedding his wardrobe for charity. James Gandolfini, who starred on the hit HBO series, is selling off 24 outfits, including the button-down blue shirt he wore in the opening credits and the bathrobe he donned to fetch the morning newspaper.
Proceeds from the June 25 pop culture auction at Christie's will go to the Wounded Warrior Project, a nonprofit group that assists severely wounded soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. Estimates for the costumes start at $500.
Gandolfini's wardrobe, which includes many outfits with the original production tags attached, is expected to bring up to $36,500.
The actor's contract allowed him to keep the clothes after the show ended its six-season run last year, Christie's said. He has authenticated all the outfits in the sale.
A tan cotton bathrobe with lavender trim and "S" insignia on the breast pocket, featured in the pilot when he got the newspaper and fed the ducks in his pool, may bring as much as $1,500.
The auction house is also offering the blood-splattered costume worn in the scene when Tony is shot by a demented Uncle Junior. Consisting of a black-and-beige short-sleeve polo shirt, white tank top and black pants, the costume could fetch up to $3,000.
Another 37 costumes worn by other lead "Sopranos" characters, including Paulie Walnuts, Christopher Moltisanti and A.J. Soprano, also are being sold, though the proceeds from those sales will not benefit the Jacksonville, Fla.-based veterans' organization.
The costumes for the series were designed by Juliet Polsca, who earned two Emmy nominations and a Costume Designers Guild Award.
HBO is owned by Time Warner Inc.
Way Da Go T!!
Thanks James. It is nice to see somebody in the Hollywood community recognize the sacrifices our troops make every day.
Tony ought to put a hit out on Ahmadinejad.
“Not fer nuttin’, T .....”
I got his autograph in the Pittsburgh airport this past September. He struck me as a class person and this only confirms the positive impression I got when I met him.
Fuggedaboutit
Johnny Sac was on Neil Cavuto’s show one day and he had no compunction about his support for the troops, also.
Tony has really been a stand up guy. He hosted a show on HBO (of all places) about or military that brought people to tears.
Yeah. He stood up for Hillary too, making a cameo appearance in that embarrassing video ad she did based on the Sopranos' last scene.
BTW, my favorite moment in that video is when Bill sits down at the table and Hillary announces: "I've ordered for the table." He is obviously disappointed to see that she's ordered a bowl of carrot sticks. Bill says: "No onion rings?" and Hillary replies: "I'm lookin' out for you."
Bill's look of resigned whippedness at that moment is priceless. You can tell he's not too thrilled to have her "lookin' out for him."
At the time this video was released, and it looked like she was a shoo-in, I remember thinking that if she got into the White House, the American people would be wearing that same look for the next four years.
A friend of mine walked away from the WTC area with Gandolfini on 9/11. Glad he understood what happened unlike most of the NYC ‘Bush lied’ idiots.
(Tony Soprano voice): OK Kidz. Tuh-day we learn about how to use da letter "F."
I later checked and, yes indeed, Gandolfini DID appear on a episode of Sesame Street.
I always picture AJ as being a whiney “bush lied” punk.
He’s not an Mp, I screwed up the HTML.
Good on you T! I loved the Sopranos and one of the reasons was that Tony was quite a conservative on the war on terror and the war in Iraq. It’s good to see that Jimmy Gandolfeni is a patriot.
He and his “Sopranos” co-stars went to visit the troops at Bethesda Naval Hospital when my fiance’s son was there after Fallujah.
