The Last Great Measure of a Man (Memorial Day Vanity)
Self | May 26, 2008 | Michael N Schlau

What is the last great measure of a man?
Is it dying on the sands of Iwo Jima
or lying face down on a Normandy Beach?
Or dying to a roadside bomber
your loved ones forever out of reach?

What is the last great measure of a man?
Is it standing tall for God and country
and answering the wartime call?
Is it helping others fight an enemy
and becoming one who gave his all?

What is the last great measure of a man?
Is it building a schools and roads
it a country devestated by a war?
Is it holding your buddy's dying hand
assuring him it was worth dying for?

What is the last great measure of a man?
Is it lying in a flag draped coffin
after dying in a foriegn land?
Is it taps and 21 gun salutes
while others at attention stand?

What is the last great measure of a man?
Is it a mother's tears holding a folded flag
knowing you are forever gone?
Or is it a father's grief at her side
as he says "I'm proud of you son"?

What is the last great measure of a man?

We Remember

We remember, your answer to your nation’s call
we remember, when so many of you gave your all
we remember, so many of you whose blood was shed
so the rest of us did not have to dread, a bomb at dawn
on our shores, terror in our streets,
trembling behind locked doors,
lest we open them to an enemy.

Our rights you secured with your life
Old Glory, flies freely this day for us
it was the price you paid for your fellowman
to live in freedom in this great land.

We remember, the price was far to costly
the price of war is never cheap
lives are spent as families weep, we remember
your valor on this day, your precious life was taken away.
Hale to Heroes of all past and current wars.

We Remember.
