In many ways, students used to get away with being very open about drug/alcohol use. In my oldest sister’s senior portrait—the one that’s in the yearbook—she’s wearing a coke spoon on her necklace. That was class of ‘82. I was class of ‘87, and nearly everyone I knew had a roach clip attached to their keyring. I don’t know anyone who got busted for it.
The real thing that I see is everyone wears their feelings on their sleeves anymore.
When I was in school, if you got your feelings hurt, that was just tough sh**. Grow some thicker skin then.
Now it’s a freaking lawsuit.
My daughter got into it with a teammate on her gymnastics team the other day. As she headed towards me all teary eyed I told her to get her butt back out there and deal with the problem. The other girl’s dad was next to me and told his girl the same thing. Neither him nor I was going to put up with this ubersensitivity that seems to be the standard of the day.
Class of '82 here, and it was fashionable at our high school to wear a roach clip (complete with feathers attached), too. Even if you never put it to use.
