It's been two years since I have had a break. It wasn't that I didn't have the opportunity; it's just that I never really thought about it. But a coming event has provided the opportunity for me to take a much-needed (and eagerly-anticipated) break from the trenches.
What's the event? Well, dear friend, I am glad to tell you: One of my older sisters is graduating from nursing school down in Southern California.
(Can I tell you all how proud I am of her? I am just busting at the seams. She's a good one, she is. And she has also become a dear, dear friend. How lucky can a brother get?)
So, in honor of this auspicious occasion, I have undertaken the heavy and onerous task of driving my customized Mustang down the Pacific Coast Highway all the way (heavy sigh) down the coast to my sister's abode, where I will watch her receive her Bachelor's degree in Nursing Science. She has a job waiting for her in the Pediatric Oncology (her first choice) department of a very prestigious hospital down there. I am so proud of her!
And I get a much-needed rest. I asked my wife if she was at peace with the trip. She said, "God seldom gives us opportunities like this. You need this. Take it. Besides," she said with a wicked grin as she wrapped her arms around me and flashed her amazing grey eyes, "Think about the homecoming."
"Wellll... okay. If you put it that way..."
So tomorrow I am off to drive, drive, drive. The weather is going to be awesome, and so is my vacation. I'll keep you all posted, since I am bringing my laptop.
And congratulations to Sis!
ER Nursing long-overdue-for-a-break ping!
Congratulations to you and your sister!
Loma Linda Hospital?
Cyber and I just got back from So.Cal., specifically, Orange County. Make sure you bring a warm jacket. It was very cool there at night. It felt like the old “June Glooms” for weather. Might have a hot summer there.
At my sister’s request, I am obliged to withhold the name of the hospital at which she will be employed. But it’s one of the most prestigious on the West Coast, if not the country.
Have a safe trip my FRiend!
Have a good ride. Enjoy the trip. Stay overnight in Cayucos before heading down into the LA basin.
I can't take a road trip without a great list of CDs, MP3s and other music sources! Satellite radio helps, too!
Have a safe and happy trip my FRiend. You’re going to love southern CA. It’s one of those “I-wouldn’t-want-to-live-there-but-it’s-a-great-place-to-visit” kind of places.
Life doesn’t get any better than that...leaving a good woman, driving a good ‘Stang, seeing family doing well, then driving ‘Stang home again and seeing your good woman. Damn, I need a beer already! Enjoy!!
But really, hope you have a good time - and don't think about that homecoming TOO much. You want to be able to stand up at your sister's graduation. ;^)
(Big Grin!) Safe trip to you, my FRiend!
I did that same trip, Vangcouver to Los Angeles, in 1984 in my 1973 Cutlass ‘S’ called “Betty-Lou”. What an amazing ride!
We look forward to an update in due course.

Sounds like a fun road trip! And we gotta have pictures. Customised ‘Stang?
Congratulations to your sister! I have a friend in Peds Oncology nursing in Georgia. Thank goodness for the caring dears who put their hearts into the work as they do.
Travel safely & check in with your progress. I’ll bet it’s a beautiful drive. :o)
Wonderful news!
Sis following in her brother’s footsteps and a great friend to boot!
Have a fabulous ride and keep track of the number of posts here cause that’s how many times you have to hug Sis.
(cues music) Do you know the way to San Jose...
I know how it is! I have a classmate who is a RN, and another who is a DON! One is already retired but the other is still working.
They both worked very hard and received much satisfaction from their caring work.
I am disapointed to learn neither got any pension plans nor health insurances at their place of employment!
So make certain your sister (and you) have such plans as a condition for employment. It is well that you are dedicated and hard working but, hey, you and your wife got to eat too!
Have a great vacation!
Congratulations to your sis, and have a safe trip!
I’d love to see a pic of your Mustang! Those cars are HAWT!
Congratulations to your sister for achieving a great
Goal and landing a wonderful job at one of the best
Hospitals in the U.S.! ( we have so many in So.Cal!)
Driving tip in So. Cal. , Like the E.R., Expect anything!
60G—have a wonderful trip! Maybe this can be a chapter in that book you keep promising us you’re gonna write!
What year Mustang do you have?
