Can use of PNG graphic (instead of JPG) cause PowerPoint 2002 to crash?

Today I was working on a PowerPoint file for a client presentation, using PowerPoint 2002 on a computer running XP Home with SP2.
I sent them the file, and they sent it back to me, substituting one of their own images, in PNG format, for a JPG image I had used.
When I opened the file they sent me, it stayed open for about five seconds, then I got the dreaded "PowerPoint has encountered an error and must close."
This happened a few more times. Then, after opening the file one more time, I right clicked on the PNG graphic and saved it instead as JPG. Then I deleted the PNG graphic and replaced it with the same graphic but in JPG format. So far, now, PowerPoint seems fine i.e. it doesn't shut down.
What's going on? Thanks.

It could be that the PNG file is corrupted or infected. Try scanning it with an AV app then try opening it in PhotoShop if you can. Other than that I got nothin’. I’ve used PNG files in PP before with no errors.

Can use of PNG graphic (instead of JPG) cause PowerPoint 2002 to crash?I wouldn't be surprised. Powerpoint doesn't play nice with lots of different things (graphics, video, Flash, etc.).

Unrequested “Get a Mac” coming in 5, 4, 3, 2...Nope. PPT is even worse on the Mac. And Keynote doesn't quite stack up yet nor is it widely used enough to warrant using it.

Yes, I have had the same problem with PNG files in PowerPoint. Use jpg or bmp.
