Specter wants Mitchell-like investigation

WASHINGTON (AP)—Sen. Arlen Specter wants an independent investigation of the Patriots’ taping of opposing coaches’ signals similar to the Mitchell Report on performance enhancing drugs in baseball.

Specter again criticized the league’s handling of the investigation and threatened the possibility of revoking the NFL’s antitrust exemption during a news conference Wednesday. The senior Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee met with former New England video assistant Matt Walsh a day earlier.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell indicated he considered the investigation over after meeting with Walsh on Tuesday.

“Everybody pooh-poohs it,” Specter said. “It’s ridiculous to make that kind of contention.”

Specter, from Pennsylvania, cited the fact a Patriots attorney sat in on Walsh’s meeting with Goodell as proof the investigation has not been impartial.

He repeated his disapproval of Goodell’s decision to destroy the notes and tapes confiscated during the initial investigation last fall.

“That sequence is incomprehensible,” Specter said. “It’s an insult to the intelligence of the people who follow it.”

If the NFL condones cheating, Specter said, it encourages others to cheat.

“They owe the public a lot more candor and a lot more credibility,” he said.

Arlen Spector is a miserable excuse for a United States Senator.... Then again, so are about ninety of his colleagues.

Hubby saw his press conference on NFL network. Said Specter really seemed mad about Goodell’s handling of the whole thing.

If this is all they have to do, adjourn the Senate and send them home for the rest of the year. We are currently drowning in a mortgage crisis, sky high gas prices (heading for outer space!!), food shortages, natural disasters, etc., etc.

If this is the most important thing that Specter and the Senate can find to do, they need to go home and get REAL jobs!!!

Anyone doubt that our government is irretrievably broken!!??

The Boston Herald’s John Tomase should have to eat Cat Poop like Ron Burgundy did.

Maybe the story was true and the negotiations for months before the meeting with Walsh were to destroy the tapes of the SB walk through so that there would be no tainted SB victory.

The way Goodell destroyed the first evidence leads me to believe he will do anything to protect his job and the SB.

An investigation right up there with “What Happened to Judge Crater?”.

Can Specter have the Senate investigate the Cincinnati Reds to see why they batted out of order over the weekend, whether a one out penalty was proper and if the double switch is too confusing for National League players to handle?

This is a game. If the NFL can't handle it, then they will go the way of the WWE - entertaining to some but no one should take it seriously. It has nothing to do with governing the nation. And if you say that it does because of all the money local governments pour into stadiums supporting the teams, I'll respond by saying "maybe they shouldn't".

Pay attention to the war, the spread of radical Islam, the inability of the nation to drill anywhere, the huge waste of money on farm subsidies or whether there is too much table talk at the national euchre championship.

Actually the last sound like it would be great for a parody of Specter. The man should be publicly ridiculed for his antics.

Even though I wasn’t pinged, I find I must agree with Runny’s assessment.

Arlen’s making a Spectacle of himself again.

I saw it...I am just one who believes a cover up took place and now the Boston Herald is taking the heat to help stop the bleeding.

My opinion...I know everyone has one.

You would think that our idiot of a senator would have better things to do. I just wish he would stick to doing things that the government should do and keep their noses out of things that are really none of their business!

Right on. This is a game, a game mind you. The government has no right to demand anything here or spend any of my money on investigating it.

Dead issue. Pats lost the big one after going undefeated after the story broke. They get to live with the stigma of chocking the big one. If they come back and win this year they will still be accused of being cheaters so who cares.

Remember it is a game.

Sure

The WH lied about WMD in Iraq

The WH orchestrated an outing of covert CIA operative Valerie Plame

The Republicans stole the election on 2000 with intimidation of black voters

The government spread AIDS and crack in the black community

and the list goes on.

Goodell’s in it up to his ears. The NFL fines and penalizes the Patriots and Belicheck who, in turn, then turn over all the “evidence” so the league can destroy it. Of course, the fines and penalties come before Goodell knows what “evidence” the Patriots have. Then Walsh shows up with all these tapes and then Goodell says of course, they knew about these episodes all along and no further penalties will be incurred and they go about trying to smear Walsh’s credibility through their butt buddies at ESPN.

Yes, Specter should have better things to do with his time, but his personal views on this reflects the majority fan opinion of this whole scandal. The Patriots, and probably more so, Belichick, will forever be seen in the eyes of the fans as cheaters. Foxboro, The Clinton White House of the NFL lives here...
