That’s probably because you’ve kept XP updated regularly, and your system was in fact, incrementally “updated” to SP3 a long while ago.

access denied.....are you running Firefox?.......
I have Firefox. But for the 2nd & 3rd tries, I closed every running program I could (including browsers, firewall, virus program, stickynotes, calendar, etc.).
The error was associated with the SP3 installation.

Yep, this is the first time it is on the windows update site.
Automatic updates will follow later.

I’m running Crossover, but am not impressed. Quicken runs, but doesn’t do much beyond adding line items. So, when I want to run it I go into Windows. And that’s about the only Windows application I run in Ubuntu.
Since I’m mostly in Ubuntu now, XP’s speed is of little issue. I go to it when needed, then back out. And once I get into XP (SP2) it’s not all that bad; just slow getting into the Desktop. (Yes, I’ve done all the startup maintenance & stuff).

Set up a VMWare install of XP under Ubuntu. Save the state of the VM as running. Then it is a matter of just turning the VM on or off. Start up time = virtually nothing.
To: LesbianThespianGymnasticMidget
When I’ve searched for VMWare I’ve found a multitude of applicatons, servers, players, etc. Some are pretty expensive. That’s why I’ve never gotten into it.
Is there a specific application I should be looking at?

“The biggest detriment to Linux is all the versions and all the distros.
They are too confusing for most people to bother with.
What is the different between Gnome and KDE?”
While I agree with you on the distro count.. But I myself would not call that a true detriment. Its about choice..I have tried many.. and each has its own good points and bad points.
Gnome is one type of desktop environment.. and KDE is another.. KDE, especially in its latest Version 4 incarnation is more like windows. But it depends on what you want to use.
I myself prefer Linux Mint 4 (Ubuntu based) with the Flubox environment. It works.. it works quickly.. very very little tweaking needed after first install... its free.. and it dose not feed Microsofts coffers while i just do what i need to do..

If the SP has to access MS home website and it uses Firefox to do so, that may be the problem. It seems that MS does not like people who use Firefox instead of Internet Explorer. My old computer here at work would not access ANY MS downloads or updates after I installed Firefox...........

Will XP3 help me? Only if you wipe out Vista and install Windows XP first.

I also installed SP3 this morning without a hitch.

I got a Vista laptop a year ago and I hated it. I recently quadrupled my memory to 4GB and it's like night and day. I like Vista now.
I spend a lot of time in front of the computer for work and play and communication and I like the flashier Aero interface. If the flashy interface stuff doesn't do anything for you I recommend sticking with XP.
And I absolutely recommend XP for my customers although the software package I write is OK on Vista.

Actual error message I received once (Mailwasher).
To: Red Badger
I may try installing directly from Microsoft, now that they have it up. [The version I previously tried was from MajorGeeks.]
First, I want to make a CloneGenius copy of my partition (in case the install screws up everything).
Then, I will try the new install.
I will try this later. We are having storms, and I don’t want a power glitch in the middle of everything.

I hope you don't mind my two cents. If you absolutely feel you can't work with Vista, I'd recommend:
Try to return the Vista laptop and exchange it for one that has XP on it. Then you can run the XP upgrade.
If you format the one you have, you'll lose the ability to do things like full factory resets on your laptop down the road if a major problem occurs. You'll also have to go out and buy a store copy of XP (probably not even the "upgrade" edition). Your format will take about an hour. Your XP install will take about an hour. Your SP3 update will take about an hour...etc. If you're a tinkerer or hobbyist, then go for it.
About 5 of the 50 systems I currently support have Vista on them ranging from Vista Business to Vista Ultimate. I actually like my personal Vista OS from an aesthetic standpoint.
The day I got Vista I hated it as well. "Why does it ask me if I'm sure I want to do something every freaking time I double click?" I asked. I found that turning off Vista's UAC (User Account Control) stopped all of those annoyances.
Now I guess turning off UAC probably defeats the purposes of the "enhanced" security supposedly built into Vista. For me, personally, I say "to heck with UAC". I turn UAC off and my system runs like a prettier XP system. The new search bars in the start menu and explorer windows are excellent as well. Click Start, type 'calculator', and press 'ENTER'.
Vista does chew up more resources than XP. If your laptop has less than 1GB of RAM, then you probably want to look into a system without Vista.
