China’s Billy Graham
What things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ. —Philippians 3:7

In 1927, John Sung boarded a ship from the US bound for Shanghai. He had been in the States for more than 7 years, earning three degrees in that time, including a Ph.D.

As the ship neared its destination, Sung threw all his diplomas, medals, and fraternity keys overboard, keeping only his doctorate diploma to show his father. He had received Jesus Christ and was determined that for the rest of his life he would live only for what counted for eternity.

Many older Christians still living in East and Southeast Asia came to know Christ through the ministry of John Sung, who has been called China’s Billy Graham for his evangelistic work. His actions demonstrate what Paul wrote in Philippians 3:7, “What things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ.”

Not everyone can do what John Sung did. But, like Paul, we all should regard the things of this life “as rubbish” (v.8), and live our lives so that they will count for eternity.

There are people within your sphere of influence whose lives you can impact for God. He has placed them there for you to point them to Jesus.

Think of someone you can speak to about Jesus Christ and what He has done for you.

Let my hands perform His bidding,
Let my feet run in His ways,
Let my eyes see Jesus only,
Let my lips speak forth His praise. —James

Only one life, ’twill soon be past; only what’s done for Christ will last.

Bible in One Year: Acts 7–11; Proverbs 12:1-14

The Derby Day 1893-4

William Powell Frith 1819-1909

Oil on canvas

Derby Day was an established day out by the 1850s. The crowds of thousands came from all social classes for the colourful entertainments as much as the race.

Frith’s first visit to Epsom Downs was in 1856, when he was taken in by a thimble-rigging gang. A team of these con-men can be seen on the left.

The Victorians were fascinated by phrenology, the reflection of social types in facial characteristics. This partly accounts for the success of The Derby Day and other crowd scenes by Frith and his followers.

This version replicates a Royal Academy exhibit of 1858. It was commissioned by James Gresham of Stretford and was thought by Frith to be better than his original.

Oops! I did it again. I wanted to share the painting in post #150 with everybody - and forgot to put your names in. I think that it is a contagious affliction - so be careful, everybody!

Famous Birthdays

The Birthday link above is pretty interesting - each day it names a few famous people who were born on this day, and tells you how old they would be (or are) today. If you run your mouse over their name, a little window will come up with their picture and tell you what they were famous for, and if they have passed on, the date of death. (Plus a lot more if you are interested.)

Example: Bing Crosby would be 105 today!

I know you like Chili’s as I do.

I normally have their margaritas or Killians but a few weeks ago had a class of their shiraz. (Jacob’s creek).. wow.. loved it. With plum, berries etc

found it at local grocery (Giant Eagle).. normal price 7.99 bottle. BUT sale with 2 dollars off.

good deal as a class at chilis is about 5 or 6..

I got a couple bottles & will get a couple more tongiht if the sale is still on

I have had mega problems with cell phone lately & no luck in getting the store to give me a TRADE.. but today ...Success with cell phone.. got a trade. I had thought that at one of the outlets near a college town would have some weekend college help who would have more compassion & I was right. Free trade. It seems to work. Time will tell but it is an improvement. Exact same flip phone by Motorola

I was to come home & do yard work but it was pouring /thunderbooming etc. so I ducked into the movie theater for shelter and saw Ironman.. Liked it. guess there is a series of 4 or more on the docket

Going at 5 to a chruch program with FReeper Wheelbarrow at his church. Program on Bonhoffer.. Movie, discussion & subway “dinner”..
