We can hope our favorite movie will come away with the big prize, but in the long run, some of the best pictures ever made did not receive Best Picture Oscars. A good example would be the AFI’s choice for number one movie of all time, Citizen Kane.

I think Philip Seymour Hoffman’s portrayal of Truman Capote was superb; one of the best acting performances I have ever seen. The movie was excellent, and tying it into the murders of the Clutter family, upon which Capote’s “In Cold Blood” was based, was a stroke of brilliance.

Yes, I consider “For a Few Dollars More” the best western ever made. My personal all-time favorite movie. Van Cleef, Kinski, Eastwood all fantastic in their larger-than-life roles. But maybe it’s just me, I love spaghetti westerns.
The Shawshank Redemption, Fargo, and Philadephia don’t even belong in the same article. Crapcrapcrap.

You beat me to it. I’m an old fart-that was the film I paid to see in the theatre during first run THIRTEEN TIMES-which remains a record for me for all genres. I watched the oscars that year, and when it wasn’t put up for a single nomination...I have never watched the academy awards again. I realized that they were a sham.
Am i the only person in the world that HATES Forrest Gump?
No. You aren’t. For Tom Hanks to win an oscar ONCE was a travesty-but to win it two years in a row (which only Spencer Tracy had done) was SACRILEGE. That film was such utter garbage, I couldn’t watch it all, although anyone that hasn’t lived in a cave since it was released should know the entire thing word for word.
As overrated and flawed as it was, I agree.
His first one was his funniest. WHAT’S UP, TIGER LILY?
I mostly agree with that list - especially Vertigo and Goodfellas and Space Odyssey - Hitch and Kubrick remain among The BEST directors of the 20th century, not counting the old guys like Murnau etc.
Dog Day Afternoon and Philadelphia? Nothing special with either.
