Considering the available crop of talent this year, no team wanted to trade up for Miami's Number One pick and be stuck paying Lexus prices for a Ford Taurus.
As it was, Miami signed Jake Long for a 5 year, $57.5 million contract which seems pretty pricey for an OL.
Could Miami have done better?
As I understand it, the rules allow waiving your Number One pick to have the next team to choose first with the privilege of getting back in line whenever you wish. That other team then gets stuck with the Number One Pick price tag.
Should the Fish have exercised that option?
Should they have picked "Howie's Kid" Long, instead?
Any opinions?

Our family is actually going to be watching the draft this year. A friend of ours has a son that is expected to be drafted. Kalani Heppe, from NC state. 6'4', 315 lbs guard. GREAT kid - dad is a Baptist minister, he is a devout Christian, graduated from a local high school. Granted, he's not expected to be a high pick, they are hoping for 4th round or so.
Fingers crossed for him!

I am reminded of an episode of the HBO show Arliss when a kid coming out of college screws over some of his agents and they spread a disinformation campaign to make him fall down the boards. When the agent who got him agrees to kick back some coin they got Holmgren to take him at #7.
Good episode.

ESPN sure took the fun out of it. Since they had the inside word for the first 5 picks (though acting like they didn’t), their TV camera was focused on each pick five minutes before the announcement of each name.
Spoiled all the excitement of it.

I dunno...I really can't complain about Jerry Reese, but here's my $0.02: I feel my G-men were lucky to get Phillips with the last pick in in Round 1. Very fast for a safety, a big hitter and he's smart.
Now, in answer to your Brady Quinn question, I feel it is the guy I wanted the Giants to pick instead of Terrell Thomas: Dan Connor. Why is he still sitting in the green room? Do they feel he is a bit undersized at 232? I hope my Giants do not regret letting Connor go...and I sure do not want to see him in the NFC East.
How do you think your Pats did?

Well one good thing about Miami signing their pick before the draft day. Signing the other first round picks should go pretty quick since the high contract has already been established.
