You said: So, the Packers take Brian Brohm. Interesting. Their GM says Aaron Rogers is the starter, but does this mean they dont consider him their long-term guy?
I think it’s one of those “trust but verify” things. Let’s face it, not many teams find a QB on the first shot, and most go through change after change at the QB position. Sometimes it takes years to finally find a guy who fits. So it’s wise to make sure you have options at that position.
You’re probably right there. I was just surprised to see them go for one in the 2nd round, especially since Rogers looked pretty comfortable out there when he got some playing time last season, and even out performed Favre. They did have 3 2nd round picks, though, and, in my opinion, Brohm was probably undervalued.
In fact, I don’t think it’s clear at all that Ryan or Flacco are really any better than Brohm. Ryan, if anything, has less of an arm than Brohm, and I’ve never been all that impressed with his overall game. Flacco is used to I-AA defenses, and just because he had an impressive arm at the Combine doesn’t mean he’ll be a successful quarterback in the NFL. Just ask Jeff George.
If it wasn’t for a mediocre senior year, which could be attributed at least in part to Bobby Petrino’s departure, Brohm would likely have been the number one QB in the draft, and a possible 1st overall pick. The Packers might have gotten themselves a steal here.
I agree, and historically the best quarterbacks are not the ones chosen in the first round.
I really don’t think that they planned on picking him, but when he was still available I think they felt they had to since they had two other second round picks.
Last year when Quinn was still available when the Packers picked I was actually hoping they would take him because I am not sold on Rodgers. I question his durability since in very little playing time he has broken a bone and come off limping noticeably on other occasions.
Guess we’ll see pretty quickly next season.
Jeez, 15 picks gone before you got out of bed this morning!
Ah, give him a break. He was dreaming about Super Bowl championships.
I don’t like Herm at all.
Hey...I’m on the West Coast- 7 AM on Sunday Morning is early!
Still having nightmares from last SB—do not think I have had a good nights rest since......
And you call yourself a fan?
There is no sleeping draft weekend!!!
You get up early,
post on three boards with 3 threads each all at the same time,
you plan your teams’s draft board,
talk trash with other fans,
yell at the TV when another team takes they gy you know your team just HAS TO HAVE,
then yell some more when your team takes a guy that you see no value in (of course when he makes the Pro Bowl you say nothing!)
and then holler when the team trades out of their slot.
Get with it man!!!
They traded the #7 pick for 2 LBs. Very shrewd move in my book since they added speed on the ILB postion and a guy that can be groomed behind Thomas and Vrabel.
They added more speed in the defensive backfield and KR with Wheatley and also signed a bunch of FA’s to replace the departed Randall Gay. If the pass rush is better and Seymour is healthy then they are in better shape all in all.
I actually would like to have seen them add a good body at the O-Line and D-Line since you can never have enough help there.
Long term planning is a good thing. Can’t go wrong with OL at this point, if any are available.
The last 4 picks in the 4th have been O-Line. It’s a good place to grab back ups that can be developed.
He’s also a good looking young kid so he’s likely to get some prime Brady scraps.
