You’re probably right there. I was just surprised to see them go for one in the 2nd round, especially since Rogers looked pretty comfortable out there when he got some playing time last season, and even out performed Favre. They did have 3 2nd round picks, though, and, in my opinion, Brohm was probably undervalued.
In fact, I don’t think it’s clear at all that Ryan or Flacco are really any better than Brohm. Ryan, if anything, has less of an arm than Brohm, and I’ve never been all that impressed with his overall game. Flacco is used to I-AA defenses, and just because he had an impressive arm at the Combine doesn’t mean he’ll be a successful quarterback in the NFL. Just ask Jeff George.
If it wasn’t for a mediocre senior year, which could be attributed at least in part to Bobby Petrino’s departure, Brohm would likely have been the number one QB in the draft, and a possible 1st overall pick. The Packers might have gotten themselves a steal here.
I agree, and historically the best quarterbacks are not the ones chosen in the first round.
I really don’t think that they planned on picking him, but when he was still available I think they felt they had to since they had two other second round picks.
Last year when Quinn was still available when the Packers picked I was actually hoping they would take him because I am not sold on Rodgers. I question his durability since in very little playing time he has broken a bone and come off limping noticeably on other occasions.
Guess we’ll see pretty quickly next season.
