An embarrassing problem

Ladies and gents,
I have a problem. I've posted here for years, and I've let it slide until now. I should have asked these questions before, but I was too lazy/indifferent to bother. Anyway, it's gotten to the point where I can't take it anymore. I can't post pictures. I can't italicize the text that I want to respond to. I can't post links. I can't post text in different colors or fonts. I've tried tinkering with the settings on Free Republic. I've tried tinkering with my web browser. Can someone out there give me an idiot-proof explaination of what I can do to remedy this problem. I'll be forever greatful. Heck, I may even send a small donation to FR in your name. Just...please...help me.

Two slashes where? I only need one? Lemme try again.

Nope...didn't work. I had the above text in the <>bracket things.
At what point does everyone start hating me? Or has it already occurred?
To: ThePythonicCow
How in the heck did I do that? Why does it only work when I copy and paste yours?
To: Jeff Head
there should be no space between the < and the a,
If you enter the left angle bracket "
<" as the four character sequence:
<
rather than as itself "
<" then you can present the suggested input exactly as it should be entered, without having to confuse the reader with extra spaces.
For your example, that would mean you type into your post:
<a href="http://www.syvjoneshouse.com"> LINK TO SVJONES HOUSE</a>
which will display to the reader as:
<a href="http://www.syvjoneshouse.com"> LINK TO SVJONES HOUSE</a>
Needless to say, when people are having problems with this, the extra spaces just add to the confusion.

Put double quotes around the URL and your image will work.
On the earlier one, you had two back slashes at the end of the URL and only needed one. You also need double quotes around the URL in that one too.

Why does it only work when I copy and paste yours?
Whatever you are typing is different somehow. Unfortunately, the FreeRepublic server software is careful to -remove- incorrect HTML syntax from your posts, so I can't see what you typed that was incorrect. You will just have to examine it, character by character, to find the difference.
As an aside, there is a good reason that our server software discards incorrect HTML codes. It is an essential defense mechanism against hackers. Our server software simply will not let random HTML codes that it doesn't understand and know to be safe to show up in posts.

Put double quotes around the URL
These are not usually needed; only if certain unusual characters are in the URL would I suppose they were needed.
I always leave them out of my image posts, due to laziness.
I always leave them out of instructions to others leaning to post images, to remove one more detail they don't need.

Okay Cow
You got me. I surrender. I just won't be able to show off all my cool old photos from elections gone by. I feel so defeated. Shame on me.
To: Zevonismymuse
You could try freep mailing me an exact cut and paste of one of your efforts to post that isn't working for you. I'm not sure, but perhaps freep mail won't remove any incorrect HTML codes, which would allow me to see any mistakes.

There must be something different between what you are typing and what you are copying from me. Examine each character, one at a time.

Now you do realize, I hope, that there is no image file at the URL of
http:/www.syvjoneshouse.com/UploadFiles/K? If you only enter part of the image URL, it won't work ;).

you have to put the < in front and the > in the end.I left the <> off so folks could see what I am doing within the brackets.
I am trying really hard to follow instructions.

When I click on the image and select properties that is exactly what come up for a picture of Gov.Pete Wilson, Bill Thomas and a pre-out of the closet Huffington.
To: Zevonismymuse
< img src="?" > (?=the address of the picture)
The url must be inside the " ". No spaces between the brackets(I had to leave spaces above for it to show).

To: Zevonismymuse
Here is what you are trying to do
start with this
< (this tells the program you are going to use html)
img (stands for image)
(add a space)
src (stands for source)
=
"?" (? is where you would put the url)
> (end with the closing html tag)
what you will see will be
<img src="?">
substitute the ? for the url and you will have your picture posted.

I think she's doing that ... though I can't be sure she's not adding spaces where she shouldn't be. Note where she stated above:
I had the above text in the <>bracket things.
Zevonismymuse -- be sure to
not put a space after the
<, and to
not put a space before the
>. Yes, I know, all the examples above (except mine) had those spaces, but those examples were misleading in that detail.

Hey, Jeff -
For IMG SRC you do not need the quotation marks on each end.
