Popular dog names sound downright human

Fido and Rover are 'so' yesterday.

When it comes to naming dogs, Americans are opting for names that are downright human. A survey using data from the computers of Veterinary Pet Insurance says the top four male dog names are Max, Buddy, Rocky, and Bailey. For female canines, it's Bella, Molly, Lucy, and Maggie.

The trend is no accident, according to those who work with dogs and humans at the Animal Humane Society. "What strikes me most about the list is the amount of people names on that list, and it all just gets back to the human/animal bond," commented Kathy Johnson, AHS Director of Veterinary Services. "Animals are being valued more in our society. There are places we don't even refer to ourselves as 'their owners', we're their guardians now, so I think this is just a trend we're seeing, that they're a part of our family." AHS President and CEO Janelle Dixon agrees, noting that people who used to keep their dogs in a kennel out back are now pushing them down the street in strollers. "People say animals have moved from the back yard, to the house, to the bedroom."

An informal survey at the Lake of the Isles dog park generally supports the trend. While dogs named Snapper and Dasher sprinted around to their hearts content, they were accompanied by furry pals with human sounding names; Vinny, Rosie, Riley, and Pearl. "Don't most dogs have human names?" Riley's chaperone, Gretta Morrison asked. "I think they do." Even those who opted for less human names chuckled at the thought of calling for a dog named Jim. "I think human names are funny, actually," said Mark McMillan, as his wife Katherine nodded. "Whatever works, you know."

Many cats in Louisiana are named “MiMi”.

My gray tabbies are named Cha-Cho and Teetsy.

Muchacho for the male
Petite for the female.

For many Americans, pets are substitutes for the children they never bothered to have, are putting off having, or are estranged from due to divorce.

Or wanted so badly to have but had no luck finding a partner. Why assume it's always by choice?

We don’t do the b-day party thing for her, but we both work at home and she gets a LOT of attention and affection.
Our entire daily schedule is planned around her.
We take her for a ride several times a week, with THESE gas prices!

Rottie: Ursa Maxime. Cats: Mingus, Thelonius, and Apple Chase. My late great Rocket J. Squirrel left us for the bridge last month.

Personally, I've always gone for names that were more creative than Spot, Fluffy or Whiskers. Not out of some need to humanize my pets, just because I wanted something more unique.

I overhear people at Petsmart refer to themselves as their animals’ “Mommy” or “Daddy”.

It’s kind of sick if you ask me.

You have cool cat names!

My girl cats are Cookie (husband named that one, said she looked like an oatmeal cookie); boy cats are Ricky and Fred.

Dog is Katie, recently lost Jack, who was, what else, a JR Terrier. Picture me putting Jack in the car while paying the vet, then coming out and finding him upending a 1/2 can of Red Bull out of the cup holder. You don’t want to ever encounter a JR on Red Bull!

Me too! Cats, Micah Big Boy, Malachi, Ben Ben, Estee Esther, Gillie Girl, Shonie Shonah, Precie Precious. Hannah Honey, and of course Gracie Rachel. And my dog Silas who is part Border Collie and part Pit Bull. He loves to herd all the cats. He is in charge of them and they know it. I also have in my household Sophie and Ruth, my mom's dog and cat.

I got a red lab named “little red snapper”. I got her free because she attacks dogs. But otherwise is a good dog...loves people...well, not the garbage man or the mailman. I only use the middle part of her name of course. I’ve always preferred one syllable names for dogs. It’s easier when giving them commands.

Some of my favorites:

Saint
King
Dog(I know, pathetic)
Rex
Mars
Max
Dutch
Zeus
Duke
Blue
Buff
Red(obviously)
Babe
Shep

Sometimes I like to come up with long silly names then only use part of it. Like maybe “ray-gun-ronnie”, then just call him ray. Or kalamazoo, and call him Kal. Rex can be a shorter version of “tyrannocanid rex” if I wanna be funny. Or I could shorten that to “tye” instead.

Very true. A lot of younger couples get a dog first to transition into a responsibility role before kids and it allows them a few years to prepare for kids.
