NFL to Consider Hair Length Rule

Troy Polamalu might not have to worry about getting tackled again by his hair. At their meetings in Palm Beach, Fla., next week, NFL owners will consider a proposal to ban players from having hair flow from their helmets below their names on the back of their jerseys.

That might affect Polamalu's image, but help him on the field. Two seasons ago, the Pittsburgh safety with the long ponytail had his hair grabbed by Kansas City's Larry Johnson and was thrown to the turf after an interception against the Chiefs.

The rule banning long hair on the field was proposed by Kansas City. It does not require players to get haircuts, but does "require them to tuck it up inside their helmets,"

He doesn't much have to now considering he's a safety.

No Fun League

There’s nothing wrong with the current rule: “it’s part of the uniform;” or “you grows your hair you takes your chances.”

Who cares. It’s just a sport. It’s a bunch of guys throwing a ball around and tackling each other.

I have seen him in person and his hair is wavy and beautiful...very healthy looking.

I know it doesn't add to the discourse, but I should post.

There’s another side effect to the long hair that’s bad for the player. His hair is considered part of his body... which means you can be called out of bounds by your hair leaving the playing field, even if the rest of you is in bounds. I saw that happen once this past season.

Hah, this has to come from that crazy interception against Roethlisberger in the Wild Card game January 5th. Jag’s intercepting player with long hair was ruled out of bounds because his long hair went of of bounds. Ruling was overturned?? I think, but that ate up a lot of time while the coaches and refs were arguing/deliberating that call.

"He pulled my haaaiiirrrrr." Incidentally, I saw this happen and thought it was one of the funniest things I'd seen.

I doubt it. In volleyball, the hair is not considered part of the body if it touches the net in a turning motion or other action that would cause the hair to move.

"You ain't playin' on my team lookin' like that."

By that standard, their own logo couldn't make the cut.

Considering how strict the NFL is regarding uniforms and how they're to be worn I'm surprised they haven't established a stricter policy on hair length. Hair sticking out from under a helmet, especially the length Polamalu wears it is a distraction ... if in the course of a tackle he's pulled to the turf by his hair there should be no penalty. Sort of like grabbing a jersey ... if that were the case the hair issue would go away quickly.

2007 Jaguars-Steelers wild card game, 2nd quarter - Rasheen Mathis was called out of bounds when his hair (and only his hair) went out of bounds on an interception return. I was watching the game at the time.

Truth is stranger than fiction!
