Depends on what you're doing, of course. Right now I'm recording three HD channels, streaming it to two televisions in the house, sync'ing Cops onto my PDA so I can watch it when absolutely bored tomorrow...

Plus enjoying Yahoo Music Engine and discovering new music. Might play a game in a few minutes too.

Every computer does different things, the secret is picking the right computer for what you want to do. For the vast majority of casual users out there, doesn't matter what it is. Hook up my PDA to a monitor and it'd probably be powerful enough to do just about everything a casual user wants to do.

Completely inaccurate. I just bought a Mac Pro and speced the same computer out at Dell and was within $100 of the Pro price. Add in the software to get what you get in iLife and its more. Do your homework before making comments like this...

Well, if money's the issue . . .

And you'd be less likely to pick up malware

I want the best for Apple, but if everyone buys Macs, malware is going to proliferate on our platform.

I’m a Mac user. I was contemplating buying a PC just to play games on. My son told me that by the time I upgraded the PC so it would be able to play the games I wanted, I’d be better off just buying a MacBook Pro, install WindowsXP on it, and I’d have two computers for the price of one. It made a lot more sense. Besides, in all the years I’ve had Macs, I’ve never had any serious problems with any of them. Plus, in all the years I’ve been on FR, the only threads requesting technical help have come from PC users.

And waste far more time waiting for the PC to boot up.

If OS X was as easy to compromise as Windows, the malware would exist. The people who sell the B1gg3r D1k cream don't really care what platform their spam spewing zombies run on.

And spend 65% of your time on maintenance and waiting for the d**ned thing to boot up.

I have a new macBook, a year old iMac, a 4 year old Emac.
Of the three, only the Emac has crashed more than twice a year, and I have never had to spend more than 2 minutes on figuring out problems, let alone put in service calls.
I think that buying the apple service plan is a waste of money.

Who can say this about their crap PC machines?
not to mention that my 1991 powerbook that still runs for fun.

I have the service plan because I am relatively new to Macs. I found that unlike MSFT, there was always someone - a COURTEOUS someone - on the other end of the line - day or night - when I needed the help. I don’t even TRY to contact MSFT when a Windows machine goes down anymore. Nobody’s home and even their knowledgebase seldom helps anymore.

I'd go with an iMac, but they need to do three things:

1) Up the maximum memory limit on RAM to 8 GB.
2) Make sure new iMacs are preloaded with MacOS X 10.5.2.
3) Provide a better keyboard (the current iMac keyboard doesn't look like it's comfortable for long-term typing).

And as everyone SHOULD know....

The fastest Windows Vista notebook tested this year (through 10/25/07)by PC World Magazine is a Mac.

Try that again: The fastest Windows Vista notebook we've tested this year--or for that matter, ever--is a Mac. Not a Dell, not a Toshiba, not even an Alienware. The $2419 (plus the price of a copy of Windows Vista, of course) MacBook Pro's PC WorldBench 6 Beta 2 score of 88 beats Gateway's E-265M by a single point, but the MacBook's score is far more impressive simply because Apple couldn't care less whether you run Windows.

So what do you think is the magic number that will suddenly attract all of these really skilled UNIX programmers who want to ruin the Mac?

We are at 30,000,000 and growing by eight million plus a year... and the Mac malware, other than a few Trojans, hasn't appeared yet.

Aristotle, security by obscurity is not the reason Macs are harder to break... they are harder. It's mostly about a lack of vectors for anything to spread.
