North Dakota has every type of land you mention in a walking distance. We usually deer hunt in the rugged western part of the state on the foot of the Badlands. You can hunt butte to butte over long ranges in one area in the morning and be driving deer out of river bottoms and shelterbelts in the afternoon.
The long distance work is accomplished well by the Ruger M77 270Win, Leopold scope. It is the short range flushing in shelterbelts and tree line that calls for a different tool. The deer can jump up 20 feet from you. One actually came up behind me this year and ran around me to the front.
You can shoot Mule deer on the same tag in this state. OTC ammo.
This is research. Keep reading.
The 30 carbine round is oft maligned, but consider this:
At 100 yards It has a velocity slightly greater at 1500fps and and energy slightly greater at 600lbs, than the 357 magnum revolver.
It is only weak for a rifle round! It is still decent compared to a pistol at 100 yds or less. Any state that allows 357 mag pistol for deer should consider it adequate.
Therefore for more accuracy than a pistol at 100 yards, and still easy to point one handed for self defense at close range, delivering more power than a 357 magnum; it really does what it was designed to do. And it holds 10, 20, 30 rd magazines, much more than a pistol too!
I've heard many disparaging comments regard the accuracy of the Mini's. However few would put down Ruger's bolt action offerings.
Don't tell me you're one of those sissies that go all wobbly at make'n em' talk once you capture them ;o)
Great rig and caliber for yer area as I am sure ya know.....have a considered a varible scope vs new rifle ?
a 6-24X VXIII would be tit’s for yer problem. Dial that 270 down to 6 in brush and up for range. If your in the rifer bottoms in scrub I’d say the Mini 30 would be a great rig for that. Close range , snap shooting. Lots of Winchester & marlin lever guns in 30-30 available as well in the pawn shops.
What is CMP?
Civilian Marksmanship Program. It replaced the Old version DCM.
Good stuff !
Link is in one of my posts above.....I buy stuff from em regular.
kinda cool. The Garand I ordered was waiting on my door step one afternoon when I came home.......:o)
Nice to be able to get a real military assault weapon delivered that way still........LOL !
Yeah that's what it is. I compare it to flushing pheasants. In fact this state is so full of birds you never know what will flush right in front of you. We have even taken an afternoon off of deer hunting to shoot some of the pheasants flocking around us.
I've seen 'um, but I think the caliber is a little small for animals the size we get here. Thanks for your response.
What grade?
It was about 14 years ago so it was good or better. All the go no go gauges were used, took it too a Garand Guru in NM I know and he said it was a perfect shooter. Not primo by far as it was issue. Had a painted on rack number and everything, wear marks where it had been in a rifle rack.
I use it as a truck gun sometimes in my flatbed 4x4. Rugged mudder with a rugged mudder of a rifle !
Nite , will check back in tomorrow !
Stay Safe !
I specifically said it was a close-in range weapon.
Better designed for humans than any other type of varmint.
I’m pretty confident my post wasn’t trying to convince anybody that an M1 was the be all and end all of deer hunting equipment.
All the folks I know who are serious about that size game (and here I’m talking whitetail, bear, cat) use either 30-06 or .270’s
Here in Washington where I am, because of the undergrowth, etc, if you get a shot at something, you’re probably gonna be less than 30 yards or so from it anyway. I had three doe in my driveway last fall that I could have easily dropped. Man, they were fat and well fed!
It’s a handy little gun to have around the house. Easy to clean and service, and I have a bunch of large capacity mags for it.

Nobody mentioned one of my favorites so far.
.303 British.
I've got a Mini-14, and while it's not a "tack driver," it's a fun rifle for the USPSA matches I've used it in, as well as a .223 plinker. Not terribly accurate, but it doesn't create huge groups at 100 yards. But I wouldn't use it for hunting.
On the other hand, I LOVE my other rugers... A Security Six in .357, a Redhawk in .44Mag (that I use to shoot loads that I'd NEVER fire out of my S&W 629), a Vaquero in .45LC, and finally, a .22LR MK2 that I'd have to guess I've fired at least 100,000 rounds through, probably more. And I've heard nothing but good things about their bolt action rifles.

Deer season is over, now they will just talk about it till next fall.
(boring)

Best regards,
By whom?
Is a .357 30 Caliber? .375?
I think that it's fairly safe to say that many people, myself included, think of cartridges in "family groups." One way might be in the development, say that the 25/06, .270 Winchester, .280 Remington, and the 30/06 being in the same family, since they "sprung from" the same (30/06) cartridge. On the other hand, (again, myself included) also group families by the nearly identical bullet diameters. So just as I would consider the 9mm Luger, .38 special, and .357 all in the 9mm family (.355 - .357), I'd consider the .30 Carbine, 7.62x39, 30-30 Winchester, 7.62 NATO, and 30/06 all "30 caliber" rounds, even though they're all completely different in ballistics and dimensions. The .375 wouldn't fit well in the group.
