Many parents want a distinctive, appropriate, special-but-not-too-special name for their children, and 58 percent believe the right name contributes to success. Some would even pay people to help find a name.
Even with all the thinking that often goes into the decision, 3 percent of parents regret the names they chose and would change it if they could, according to a survey by BabyCenter.
They often said they would make a switch because a name has become too popular or gets mispronounced. A few parents felt that the name just doesn't seem to fit their child, the company said.
"Many parents view selecting a name for their baby as one of the most important and most difficult decisions they've ever made," said BabyCenter editor-in-chief Linda Murray. "Parents want to find a name that conveys their child's unique identity and will suit their personality throughout their lifetime."
Parents of boys said they wanted to convey strength and individuality, while femininity was the top concern for parents of girls.
Other findings included:
9 percent of new and expectant parents would pay someone to help them pick a name 48 said celebrities don't influence baby naming trends 26 percent said mom's vote has more weight than dad's when it comes to baby naming
People also said they look for different things in a first and middle name. The most important thing for a first name is sounding good, parents said. For a middle name, it was honoring a family member or carrying on a naming tradition.
However, 57 percent of parents said their kids are not named after anyone or anything in particular.
In December, BabyCenter released lists of the top 10 names for boys and girls.
I like Frank Zappa’s choices for his kids:
Moon Unit
Dweezil
Her parents were Yang and Sang Bang.
Are they related too, or big fans of Chang Lim Bang?
Join the club. I spent a good part of last evening insisting to my 12 year old daughter that 80s music reigns supreme in the pop annals.
She didn’t buy it. :)
Waltrout (or Waltraut) is a good German name, although not as elegant as my favorite, Mechtildis. There are other German girls’ names with the -traut suffix.
Jello’s real name is probably something like Clarence Chinewski or something!
Your daughter is probably just a little too young for the 80’s revival. My teenagers are living in 1986. (They look a lot like the old pictures of my brother and me :-).
Not in the Roman Catholic family I grew up in. All the first names were to be saints. My grandmother wanted to name my father Jack but couldn’t because it wasn’t a saints name so she named him John and never called him it a day in his life.
Interesting because it was obvious the guy was born in 1977 or 1978 during the time of the Roots phenomenon.
In black communities, you will find many black females in their early thirties named Aisha because of the big Stevie Wonder hit,Isn’t She Lovely, where he mentions his daughter’s name,Aisha.
LOL
One of my supervisors at the Post Office was named Charles Charles.
To say nothing of the fact that until he’s reached the age of reason, the boy will have zero idea what those letters are or mean.
My little brother is a III. When he turned four, he insisted on being referred to as the Fourth. Took him a year to shake that delusion.
I met a Lexus last week at one of our high schools. Also,a Deville and lots of Porsches.
We have a few Gaylords in our family. They all go by their various middle names.
My brother (the III one) used to date a girl named Candy Bush.
I am not making that up.
I work in an IT department and we use the first initial last name email account naming convention. We all burst out in juvenile laughter when a request came through to set up a new employee named Trish Watt.
She has the only account in the company using just a last name.
How about Seven?
Betcha it wasn’t just Brenda . . . Paul Enis had issues with it too.
My dad had a pompous and obnoxious older brother named Robert Eugene ___. His oldest son, who did become a very successful contractor, was named Robert Eugene ___ II. His other two sons got everyday forgettable names. By golly, there is now a Robert Eugene ___ V! I don’t even have a son to carry on my part of the ___ dynasty though.
I heard that one years ago from Howard Stern! 8-)
